Help!.....Loss of oil pressure + bag of spanners

It's the weekend, its stopped raining and havent been out in the car for 4 days, so time for a play. What could possibly spoil my fun?
Well my car has started running like a bag of spanners. It had a major service(24,000mile) 2 weeks ago and was running like a dream, until this morning. I am not overly mechanically minded and will take the car back to Offords on Monday. However, I would welcome some basic advice 1st.
Here is the problem.
Oil pressure is normally very steady at apox 55. However, today when I back off the accelerater it drops immediately to 30 and the car almost stalls. As I add revs the oil pressure rises back to 55, but not very smoothly, and the cars acceleration is very jumpy. Temp is stable throughout.
Questions
1. Are there any simple things I should Check today?
2. The garage is over 40 miles away. Should I drive there?

would display those symptoms if leads , coil breaking down water in ecu plug as I had
IE car not running on all 8 cylinders coughing spluttering stalling
Oil pressure would drop with revs ... fingers crossed it is this and not a major mechanical fault
dont run it until you know!
do you get MIL light and Buzzer also??

As already advised get it back to Offords to see if they can find the problem, if you are in the RAC/AA you can get recovered to Offords. Hopefully it is something simple, I recently had a scare but found it to be a faulty Plug Lead, I had similar symptoms to you except the oil pressure was unaffected, got a new set of different Plug Leads fitted and all is perfect again.

As I discovered once, also when wanting to recover to Offords, if you break down on the road the AA will take the car to any garage in the country. However, if it's at your house they'll only take it to the nearest dealer (Castle TVR in my case). The moral of this story is to push or tow it up the road a bit then call them out.
what is your battery voltage and alternator output? the alt output should be around 14.4v, it sounds like it could be one of those to me if the car dies when the throttle isnt on. If it gets very low though the engine will just stall. Without actually looking and seeing the car myself tho i would only take my suggestion as a guide, and if the oil pressure is that low i wouldnt drive it.
If the revs drop below normal idle the oil pressure will also fall, so as Toady1 suggests maybe you have the cause and effect the wrong way round?
If you hold the revs at around 1000rpm is the oil pressure stable, and the same as it used to be? If so, I reckon you have an electrical or fuel problem.

You said "It's stopped raining, so....." Was the car parked outside in the rain? If it was, and it was running perfectly before, I'd suspect you have water somewhere, and its creating a short, probably on the coil packs (they are flat, and have a lip on them - perfect for holding water!.

Yes it was parked out in very heavy rain for a few days. Started her up today and the oil pressure sat nicely at 50. After letting her warm up to temp deciced to tentativley drive down the road. No oil pressure dipping. Infact, the complete opposite, as i add revs (didnt go above 3500). the oil presure started to rise to 60 then drop back when revs removed. Normally the oil pressure is very stable. I am not going to risk it and will get offords to sort it tomorrow. Hope it is just a water electrical issue as I want to go to Santapod next weekend. Thanks all for advice. Finger crossed will post diagnosis tomorrow.
thats what it will do mate! the oil pump is mechanically driven hebce the oil pressure will rise with the engine revs! As i said before it sounded more like an electrical fault to me. Im sure its fine as you say its now idling ok and at about 50psi. Dont worry about the oil pressure rising to 60psi when doing 3500revs, thats what it should do, worry if it does the opposite!

Anyway they hooked it up to the PC and some of the readings were not right (lambda sesnors etc bad). Turned out to be water running down the wiring and into the connections on the back of the ECU box in the passengers footwell. All sorted an running like a dream again. Took 1 hour and no charge.... Thanks Offords.
