My Norton Anti-Virus has just expired after 12 months. Before I subscribe again, I was wondering, if anybody has a better one than Norton, can they lete me know. - I run a mac, if that makes any difference

Don't know if Avast will work on a Mac but it's great on a PC and is free of charge.

I wouldn't bother, tbh.

The risk of virus infection on a Mac is currently so low that it's not worth the chew of having AV software installed.

Quite so. And even if I *did* run AV software on a Mac it certainly wouln't be any Norton product. All you really need do is make sure your system is up to date, your firewall is turned on and, if you're really paranoid, use Little Snitch to watch your outgoing connections. If you stick to a sensible working practice there really is nothing to protect against... yet.
