Couple of questions.

1) Mine seems to work every so often but mostly not at all. Are they always troublesome?

2) Can it be disabled/removed and go back to good old intermittent?

For it to work it has to be switched on every journey as it automatically switches off when ignition is turned off, so you need to turn the wiper stalk to off then back to the first intermittent position.
If you really want just intermittent function then disconect the rain sensor by the mirror and the system will default to intermittent function.

Cheers. I think I'll go back to 'normal' intermittent then. Rain sensors always sounded like a good idea, but I had a feeling it wouldn't be....

Mine work perfectly - but then someone who works for me has a 530d and hates them. I think its down to what you expect rather than if they work or not...

Personally I love my rain sensing wipers. I never have it on any other setting. It just depends on the sensitivity you set them to and you have to play around to see what suits you best.

Mine used to work perfectly on my 530D until one day.....

In the outside lane of the motorway overtaking a lorry when it was hammering down. Wipers just stopped dead. No amount of fiddling with the stalk (oo-eer) would start them again. Managed to get to the hard shoulder (driving by wing mirrors onyl at this point) turned the engine off and back on and they started working again. Never quite trusted them after that though.
