Just got new Front EBC discs and Mintek pads added to the girlfriends Civic Type-R. Forgot to ask the garage at the time but I seem to remember somebody telling me previously that they need to follow some sort of running in before you can use the properly in 'anger' ?

Am I making this up or do you have to be a bit careful at first ?

Grateful for any advice !

P.S. The girlfriend already thinks they seem to be way more powerful than the old standard ones, dunno if anybody has had any similar experience ?

I dont know if it applies to all brake pads. But Axxis Ultimates (A pad of choise on the MX5), are bedded in by doing 2 or 3 hard 70mph to almost stopped. Then leave them to cool over night. Obviously you need to do that somewhere quiet and check theres no-one behind you at all!

Do mintex recommend the same...I dont know but I bet it says on one of their boxes...

I seem to remember that the bedding-in procedure for Mintex was similar. You might find they describe it on their web site.

I just got new discs and pads on the rear of the MR2 last week. The running in procedure I used was a 120 mile round trip from Aberdeen to Aviemore, over some fantastic roads and up and over the Lecht (tough on brakes if you are going for it). Worked for me, at least seem to be fine.......

ps. - On hindsight, possibly not the best method......

Thanks for the info - I can't seem to see much on the Mintek website but from your replies it seems I don't need to worry about the discs being ruined by too much heavy use when new.

I'll tell the girlfriend to go out and hammer them !!

I personally dont think you should

Surely you will work harden the discs, and just generate a sheen on the pads.

Ive always let things warm up then bed in, and brakes are in my eyes no exception to the rule. You dont want them going blue as then they are no use to you!

^^^ yep

two schools of thought :
1. cane them immediately
2. bed them in gently over 200ml or so

Nr 2 might be dull, but your new set up will likely last longer

avoid harsh/prolonged braking within the bed in period

hope it's not too late!

Third school of thought is to follow the specified bedding in procedure, which is neither of the above.

OK - It is still fine as the car hasn't been used over the weekend !

I think we will be doing the heavy 70-20mph braking method and then leaving them overnight as the bedding in process.

Thanks again for your help !
