Is anyone else planning on entering this competion in the Sunday Times driving section? Basically, they're planning on sending the best entries they get onto the transport minister for consideration. God knows what criteria they're really going to apply, but they say:

"...But the best law is a combination of natural justice and practical common sense, so you, the people, should decide. Whether it is a new law you have in mind, or an old law you would like to scrap or amend, send your ideas by email..."

If only that criteria had been applied to the new road safety bill

"The Competition
The six best suggestions for a new road law will win a pair of tickets to the Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy at Silverstone on Sunday May 7....Send suggestions to: roadlaw@sunday-times.co.uk"

Just to get your blood up, here is what is being proposed by Steve Housham of the Transport 2000 lobby group:

"...wants to introduce the Responsible Road Speeds Act: a 20mph limit in all residential areas, 20mph on mixed-use country lanes, and a cut in the national speed limits to 50mph (60mph on motorways). 'Current speed limits do not respect people through providing safer streets, nor the environment through reducing carbon emissions,' he says."

After reading that, my first reaction is to propose a law against loony lobbyists, but perhaps that is just me

I've always thought (and said) there should be more Traffic Police and a lot less cameras (I think they should stick cameras outside schools etc, with a roundel on the back indicating the speed - probably 20 - during school times).

When you think about, Police officers are about the most repressed group of people you could meet.

Not allowed to be a member of a Political Party.
Not allowed to strike.
Not allowed to work in the same area as a family member with a business ineterest (Try that for size Jowell!)
Not allowed to voice your own private opinions without risk of censure or unemployment.
Not allowed to serve on a jury even when you retire.
Not allowed to go to a perty without some fool moaning at you regarding the speeding ticket that just came through.

There are probably a few more.

Tell me about it! I don't tend to socialise much these days (apart from here ) Someone will always tell everybody else what i do, and that's then the end to any sort of normal converstaion i can have. All the old hilarious jokes get rolled out - "Ello ello ello!" "I better make sure my cars taxed" "She's over here Officer, take her away!" Oh how my sides split......

It's only human nature i suppose, but it does astound me that people genuinely think that we don't speed from time to time, get drunk and be silly from time to time etc...

The good thing is that you know when you have pulled when a female asks you if you get to take your handcuffs home with you....

Depending on the crowd, I would sometimes tell people that I was a psychiatric nurse (my previous occupation) as I couldn't be bothered with all the things you have just mentioned HW. It really wore me down sometimes.

I sympathise, it must be really annoying! There's an annoying reaction to almost every profession:

Dentist? - "Oooh, I hate dentists!"
Cello player? - "I bet you wished you'd learnt the violin!"
Doctor? - "Oooh, I've got this rash on my bollox."
Traffic Warden? - "Fk off."

Police Officers can now serve on juries (even if they are still serving). Mate of mine from work did it last year for two weeks.

Suggestion for a new motoring law hmm...

All members of Transport 2000, Brake, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and any other clueless pressure group to be bound, gagged, prevented from leaving their homes and not allowed access to any form of communication device or the outside world in general.

All those in agreement say "aye"
