Water leak identified! How to sort it?

Hi there!

It's been a while since the last time a posted anything.

Well, I have had wet carpets (driver's footwell) for sometime and I have discovered the water is coming into the car through the hole in the bulkhead for the steering column. So could it be the steering bearing? In that case, is it difficult top replace it or to sort the problem?

There is a pair of rubber seals where the steering rod goes through the footwell so they might need renewing, but check that the sealant around the hole hasn't lifted first.

i have a similar problem but its the passenger footwell that gets wet when it rains. i have had to remove the carpets as the car is starting to smell like a damp dog but now it just highlights how much water is actually getting into the car. does anyone know of any obvious places to look and/or which is the best way to leave the car parked when outside, i.e uphill, downhill, upside down etc etc.

It wont help your footwell carpets but i allways park uphill, as i found if im facing down hill the boot leaks when the channel fills up.

The most likely place for water to get into the passenger footwell is around the door seal but this is easily cured by removing the seal and running a bead of silicon sealant around the exposed lip before refitting the seal.

One other common place for water ingress is through a grommet in the bulkhead between the wiper motor and the wing. If extra cables have been forced through the grommet then it has probably deformed or split but can be easily fixed with yet more silicon sealant!
