Fellow Jap Fiends,

J Tuner has been ut for almost a year now, but it hardly ever gets mentioned on here.

It was destined for greatness, it could have been so much - but alas!

I subscribed to it after issue 1, but its not looking like I'll be renewing. The other magazine I subscribe to is EVO. The contrast between the two is clear.

I know when I can expect an EVO issue to drop onto the doormat - I havent got any idea with JT, its certainly not something i look forward to.

When I get my EVO I read it from cover to cover, JT only warrents a cursory skim through.

It just doesn't "appeal" to me....

Am I the only one who thinks its a bit cack?

Alas, I couldn't agree more Flibbles. I bailed out from JT at around issue 6 iirc, it was getting sooooo painfully dull.
These days I don't get any car mags regularly but cherry pick between the always good Evo, PPC, Jap perf & Retro car etc.
Btw i notice Top Gear mag is getting excited about the proto GTR & has a day countdown to realease on its front cover.

Eulogy (sp?) to J-Tuner, in the style of 'Private Eye' (my other fave read)
So J-Tuner, gone & forgotten,
You promised so much
-like most other Future Publishing mags do
but are really a bit crap.

I gave up after issue 2 (I think), but that was because they did something naughty and I had to complain.

Shame really. Never actually got round to buying it coz none of the local newsagents stock it!

They came along to a little London meet we had on Sunday to take photos so, if you like RX-7's, there should be a few choice photos in the next issue.

My main problem with the Jap-scene mags is there's only so many high power scoobies you can look at before it gets very boring. None of them cover anything in a detailed and technical manner and are all focussed on bling and ICE.

Maybe if they devoted 10 pages to a build and went into some serious detail covering start to finish or had a decent tech focus thn they'd be good. But that takes effort and time to put together.

car mags bore me rigid, the only one i buy is Honda Tuning, a US based magazine but has great technical how to's and write ups. The rest are crapola! Guaranteed to be on the cover of any aussie mag month in month out is a pic of either a Commodore or a Falcon, every month without fail, even when they do Car of the Year, the Commo/Falcon is on the cover somewhere....

And Hot 4's etc max power... woudn't wipe up after the dog with them, in respect to my dog!

Have to agree with you Flibbles. Only other car mag I subscribe to is Evo and I won't be renewing my J-Tuner subscription again, it's better than most of the other jap-based mags out there but it's not as entertaining as Evo and there are too many articles that I just ignore because they totally don't interest me.

Evo just goes from strength to strength though, photography is always stunning and they always do such a great job of putting you in the drivers seat, making you feel like you're sat alongside them.

My car was part of the First J Tuner Mag during a "Supra Thrash". It started with so much promise, they were going to make it like "EVO" but for Jap cars, and more techinacal. I was even asked by the guy about doing tech features for them. Never heard anymore then it kind of went all Max Power

I think it was them putting up personal details on the 'club details' section, rather than just a website or an email they were putting up phone numbers and people's addresses, not the best idea for security.

OK, I'm going to brace myself for a flaming here!

I would have to disagree with the popular opinion, I feel that J-Tuner is one of the better Jap mags out there (certainly available in the UK), it is more technical than Jap Performance (certainly more accurate! JP has a tendancy to include a few inaccuracies in the write-ups, less Max Power than Banzai and includes a far more diverse rage of models than both of the afore mentioned publications. I.e. it isn't cover to cover Imprezas (not that I have any problems with Imprezas, hell I used to own one! but there is more to the Jap car scene than STis, Evos and Supras).

I think there is room for improvement, but I have been impressed with many of the J-Tuner issues, I do read from cover to cover, I don't with Banzai and not always with JP. I have subscribed to Evo, while I like the write-ups and think they cover the cars in great depth, I find the focus on hot-hatches a bit much at times and I can't really relate to Evo as I would never buy a new car so the "buy a Focus ST, best car you can buy for £20k" type article means nothing to me I look at £20k as giving me the ability to buy a sorted FD and leave me enough money to rebuild the engine with the specific porting that I want etc.

but that is just me..... So flame away people!

Nicola- what was the naughty thing from issue 2?

I was sent issue 1 & 2 free, that is why I stopped reading after issue 2.

The silly thing J tuner did was print a list of names and addresses which also basically told you what car was at the address.
I was one of the listed (J tuner had not asked anyones permission, I spoke to lots of annoyed people after the listing). I think the details had come from the people who organise JAE as it was everyone who had booked a club stand.

Nice details for car thieves.

Sorry to hear about that Nicol@. Blindingly obvious mistake from Future Publishing.

RotaryPower, imho accuracy is one thing J-Tuner is NOT good at, & the so called tech sections are little more than insultingly simplistic info-mercials. The whole 'project cars' section, which I was really interested in was a farce.- had no continuity, the cars would change without any sort of explanation, & by & large the modifications were cr@p or dull at best.

[rant over] Sorry chaps, I feel better now I've had me meds'

fair enough, I just feel that of the Jap specific mags J-Tuner is the best of the UK crop. US and Aussie mags - that is a different matter....
