Hi,

I'm just wiring up lights etc now and am a bit stumped. (I know the following might sound like a daft question but my car has never worked since I've owned it, so forgive me!)

There is the Light switch on the dash panel, and 3 positions on the column switch. So, I'm guessing that the panel switch is for side lights, the 3 positions on the column are off-dip-main? Can anyone just confirm this for me and that the dash switch isn't for dipping main beam?

Also, another guess is that the side lights can still be operated with the ignition off, but what about the main/dipped lights, are these normally fed from an ignition 'on' feed or permanently live at the switch?

Sitting in a heap of wires, scratching head.

Darren.

The switch in the dash is for the instrumentation illuminations if I remember correctly.

There are two dash switches, marked "panel" and "lights".

"Lights" switches the headlights on. The column stalk, as you correctly say, is for side (down), dipped (middle), and full beam (up). With the ignition off, just the side lights come on, whatever position the stalk is in, so I presume the feed for the headlights comes from the ignition.

That's how mine's wired, any way...

Not sure about models with separate side lights.

edited as I've just looked at your profile and it's an S3, so should be the same

Yes, I have 2 switches, one marked panel and one marked lights. I've got the separate sidelights on mine, but assume the wiring must be the same.

Cheers for the info, I'll get crimping!!

Hi Darren,

None of my lights are wired through the ignition, they're all direct from the battery (via a fuse). In hindsight I wish I'd put relays in for the dip and main beam as I have all those amps going up to the switch on the column (I suppose Triumph knew what they were doing when they designed it!?!).

There may have been a Spitfire handbook in that bag of Sprint mags you borrowed the other week (were they any use?), if it is then you could have a look at the wiring diagram in there (I seem to remember it's in the back) and the Vixen set up should be pretty much the same. If not, the M series cars are also very similar (but with an alternator) and there are several web sites with M series wiring diagrams.

Regards,

Phil

Hi Phil,

I've wired in a couple of relays for main and dipped already as they're on Halogens now and wasn't sure if the column switch was up to it (it looks pretty sore as it is!)

I'm about half way through those Sprint mags (Plenty of reference material, thanks) and haven't come across a Spitfire handbook yet, although I did find a fiver in one of them! (You will get that back!) I'll get looking for an M diagram, I sure I've seen a downloadable one on the net somewhere?

Cheers for the advice, hopefully see you soon.

DK.
