Help with purchase

Hi all,
I went to look at a Cerbera today www.pistonheads.com/sales/41480.htm and would appreciate some help. The car looked and sounded fantastic however there were just a couple of points.
The first is the owner spent around £7000 when he first got it but in the past year it has only done around 400 miles in it, which i know from reading the forum is never usually a good thing would this be a major problem, he says that he just had to replace the battery and it started first time, it certainly did today.
The other is the colour, its Rosso Pearl which looked great, however the car looked slightly faded in places but this may have just been an effect of the paint and the por light, he also said that the colour cannot be touched up effectively and would need a full respray in the case of scratching it etc. The car does have the occasional stone chip but nothing serious.
The last thing is the price which to me seems at the very top end for a 4.2 of this vintage would you agree and if not what would be a fair price to pay?
Apart from these issues the car looked in fantastic condition and sounded great, started first time and teh oil pressure was good.
I'd appreciate any comments and if anyone in the local Aberdeen area would be willing to lend me there expertise that would be very welcome.
Cheers

price seems ok for age and extras etc. A respray will be reqd and that will cost ya. Only 400 miles wound very much worry me! So if you are worried about either items then either walk, make an offer or just buy it. There are plenty about and if you can stretch to anoter £2K then you are into the good 4.5s. (That £2K is a lot less than a respray).
Also when is the car due a service?
Also when is the car due a service?
The money was spent on the following as far as i can remember:
New top control arms for front suspension,
Nitrons,
Chassis paint,
New cylinder head gaskets,
Full service,
Tuscan brakes and spacers for original calipers,
Goodridge brake hoses,
Samco hoses,
Stainless water pipes,
18" Spiders Tuscan fronts and rears which i know a lot of people say should not be used as they rub but he says they definetly don't with the correct offset and the stiffer Nitrons.
You say that the car will need a respray, is this a something it will definetly need in the near future or just something that will be required once the chips get to bad. Can you give any idea of cost?

Seems like a good enough car to me, if a grand too expensive...
As to a respray, do you like the car as it is? Then don't worry about it. If you want to go for a respray then you can get a very similar colour to rosso pearl (nightfire red?) and do a whole car spray over, which shouldn't be too much for the similar colour. If you take the opportunity to change the colour completely, then that would be expensive.

Regarding the Rosso Pearl, my last cerb was Rosso Pearl; you can bring a lot of the colour back with products and elbow grease. The Rosso Pearl was known for fading.
Also on spiders, cerbs use the Tuscan fronts all round. I’ve never had rubbing

Well that makes me feel a bit better about the colour then as i'm not adverse to spending a full day polishing it. The car will mainly be left outside as well as the garage is to full to even walk through at the moment never mind park a car in, hopefully soon to be sorted out with the arrival of a garden shed but not for another couple of months. So is sitting out in the sunshine a big problem for the paint?
The thing with the wheels is that it actually has Tuscan rear alloys on the back not front alloys, hence i was commenting on the problems i have heard about. All i guess i can do is check what is like when i go for a test drive.

You can modify the arches to make the rears fit. From what I understand, the factory cars on 18's have that done.
I had my modified at HHC (and used Nitrons) and never had a problem with rubbing.

I bought a 4.5 that is exactly the same as this 5 weeks ago. Mine is a 1998 on an R plate. It has faded but also the laquer is coming away in a couple of spots. I paid £12850 on the basis that it needed a full re-spray. Mechanics, chassis etc are all spot on just needs a sports exhaust.
Most of these cars are over priced and there isn't a queue of people to buy them. A dealer will have this car up for this price and there should be at least £3k between a dealer and a private deal. (A dealer will need £5k mark up so you should go somewhere in between) I wouldn't pay more than £11k if it needs a re-spray

There are plenty of 99 era 4.5s in decent colours going for well over £20K at indie dealers. Should expect £16 - 19K private for a 99 with all the extras (sports exhaust, nitrons, spiders, history, good paint..). You can try all you like to talk the prices down all you like!!

Above now sold! Looks like prices are on the rise for the summer

First of all Guys - Stop talking the prices down ! We'll all need to sell ours one day, and we all know howt much money we have spent on them. One with Nitrons on is, IMHO def worth a bit more than one with the original suspension - which on a 98 ish car will probably need replacing anyway.
If you buy a standard car, then add Nitrons and a sports exhaust, you've already added about 2k to your purchase price!
Rosso Red does fade in the sun - so buy a cover for it to stop it getting worse. In the pic the guys got a Skyline in the Garage, maybe thats why he's only done 400 mies in the Cerb, kept it off the roads during the winter to avoid the salt that will rot the chassis, so not neccassarily a bad thing - it shows he cares for it !
