A38 Gatso destroyed again!
Discussion
Just seen on the local news (BBC Points West) that the Gatso at Rooksbridge A38 has been set on fire again.
A good anti speed camera article from the BBC followed. They said that many cameras were being destroyed and were not going to be replaced. The people see them as revenue raisers.
They even had a reporter live at the scene, standing on the ashes and saying "it's possible we are seeing the end of the speed camera era".
Quite amazing for the BBC!

But how long until the mobile scamera vans become targets themselves?
Hopefully not too long.
From the Top Gear test results the Gatsos seem to be unable to detect an object travelling in excess of 170mph .... if this is the case, do you think the Talivan would actually see the RPG coming?

You're more than likely correct. The irony is that fixed cams will reduce speed in certain areas especially when their position gets known, they'll then stop paying for themselves so why keep um up n running?

So you think it's an inside job then???

It's obviously not but you can understand why they are reluctant to replace some cameras these days, GATSO's are 30k or whatever each and some if they're properly painted and visible won't get that money back. I'd imagine they're far more in favour of SPECS type systems or hidden mobiles these days.
Fixed Gatsos are preferable to mobile ones. And if they're positioned to stop mickey taking near schools, in quiet little villages and at accident black spots and sign posted they'd be a good thing.
Sadly our law enforcment agencies seem not to understand this. Our local mobile scamera was at it again last week. Positioned as always looking in the direction in which the road widens from a two lane into a dual carriageway while keeping a 30 limit. Contribution to safety = nill, contribution to inland revenue= lots. Of course if they put the thing on the other side of the road they'd catch the suicidal nutters, who do occasionally bump into things, going the opposite way, from dual carriageway into a two lane road. There's a pedestrian island just after the merging of the lanes and the ammount of near misses as cars race each other and cut in before they hit either another car or that island is incredible. Do they ever point the camera that way? No. Why? Because more people speed safely going the other way, with plenty of gap behind them to get a nice clear shot.
And while all this goes on pervs chase local girls home from our school, cars get torched across the road, druggies chuck needles at Mrs C and her pram, sheds get broken into and two men tried to force a local boy into the back of their van.
To be fair the last incident was reported via our local neighbourhood watch so some effort is comming our way.
Please note I'm not knocking the local BiB, I'm just pointing out a somewhat odd set of priorities being set by their masters.
