I will be buying my Dad a ticket to go to this year Goodwood Revival.

In the past when we have been to motor sport events we will buy a general admission ticket and find a place to stand and watch the race. Having never been to Goodwood I do not know what the general admission viewing is like. If I am to get a grandstand seat which stand will give the best view to watch. Are there good viewing areas from general admission?

I am only going for 1 day and not the complete weekend, which day is the best day to go for racing and atmosphere?

Any comments from people’s previous experiences would be a great help.

Thanks

Andy

Guess what, there's no easy answer.

There is too much to see (presuming it's your first visit) in one day. So unless you need to sit down, a grandstand is not essential. However for Sat/Sun, it could be more useful.

Public Viewing: The main straight does get busy (Woodcote to Madgwick), especially on later days. But if you go on Friday and can stand a hike, I always recommend walking the circuit. Some superb views, great photo angles, and much quieter out the back. You can do it in 2 hours easy. However it is much busier on Sat/Sun, and this is less possible.

Grandstands: If you do, they are all pretty good. For you, any along the pit straight would be fine, but the Chicane is very nice.

Paddock: Access is free, but you can only get inside the "posh" Paddock (where all the really fancy cars are) with the right pass, which I don't think you can get. You can walk around the outside though and still see quite a lot. You can freely browse the plebs Paddock, and stand on the outside of the Assembly Area. there is a lot to see and do, and you can spend a lot of time there.
Do note that even as a punter, you are encouraged to dress up if you visit the Paddock. It is worth the effort and willing is more important than accuracy. A jacket, tie, chinos and black shoes is a good start. Ferrari jacket, jeans and trainers won't get you far when chatting to competitors.

Friday: All practice. Make an early morning session for Paddock viewing (while it's relatively quiet). Walk the circuit. Then you've got the rest of the day to do what you want (watch, go back in the Paddock, etc.) Best day for the "spod" who wants to see the cars properly, even if they are not actually racing. Best day for photo's (both Paddock and Track)

Saturday: Some practice, then Racing. Much busier, so plan to be there early (8 o'clock). You will need to find your 'spot' and settle in for much of the day. Best day for the ordinary punter.

Sunday: All Racing. Heaving. The day you would most likely want the guaranteed Grandstand seats.

Do remember that most featurettes are on all days (air displays, etc.). Lancaster fly past excepted, you won't really miss anything.

And once you've done it, start planning for multiple days in 2007 - you will be hooked!

Indeed, much better than the FOS, IMHO.

I think you can get into the inner-paddock with Goodwood Road Racing Club membership (pricey).

Thanks for your replys think i will offer my Dad the choice of either Sat or Sun as think he might enjoy getting a close look at the cars as mucha as watching the races.

I better start looking for as costume.

Thanks again

I always buy grandstand tickets just in case the weather is bad.

Couldn't agree more with Hirich. Definitely dress for the occasion - I dug out my old biker jacket and rocked the '50s er...rocker look.

A couple of things to add:

Have a look at the timetable on the Goodwood site before going and work out the races you most want to see and plan your paddock visits in between plus there are lots of merchandise stalls as well.

Bring lunch with you - I've found Goodwood to be a fair bit more expensive than the average circuit. Having said that, the programme is often a great souvenir and worth buying at least once.

When i have been(alot!) i have always stood at the chicane. If you can get the passes the inner paddock is brill! (i know the duke so i have always had this pleasure!). Definitely bring lunch. Also if you're going for 2 days, dont get hammered on the first day-the odd V10 screaming past invokes a VERY large headache!
