Pregnancy Ultrasound Scans (Advice needed)

Hi all,
I was just wondering what you guys would do if your wife was wanting an extra ultrasound scan to see if we were having a boy or girl.
The scan that my partner wants is on the link below (click on the top banner for the Pics of a scan)

It comes down to the fact the NHS only is not going to pay for the scan and they will only do 2 scans then you have to pay.
So the question is would you pay for the scan (400 with all fees) or would you spend it on something that you want (Set of Zertec interiour upgrades for example????)

I wouldn't pay the money. Are you going to get £400 of benefit from knowing now rather than later? If it was a question of the baby's health then I'd pay (but in that case you'd get it on the NHS anyway).
What's the point, let's face it, you can't send it back if it's not what you wanted. I say Zertec need the money.

flasher said: No bloody way! Half the fun of having a child is Natures secret of not knowing the sex. Unless there is a health risk or special reason then there is no need to know. Don't waste your money!! As long it's a healthy baby the sex doesn't matter, surely?

I, personally, wouldn't want to know. Don't know strictly why, but I guess it takes the 'fun' out of it, for want of a better word. We had a son in the Luton and Dunstable Hospital, just under two years ago, and we didn't want to know what we were having. The bizzare thing is, even if we had asked, they couldn't have told us. Apparently, the hospital covers such a racially diverse area, it's too dangerous to tell certain parents what they're having - if families from certain religions (etc) are expecting girls, the mothers might accidentally fall down the stairs, for example!
!!!!! So basically the same rule applied to us. We weren't even offered a payment option, but as I said, it wasn't for us.
Just think of the fun you'll have painting the nursery a nice neutral yellow - thats what I did!
! You know how much you want the Zertec bits!

Spend the £400 (or more if you've got it) on the widescreen tv, dvd player and surround sound for endless happy nights in. If you already have those by all means get lots of scans and bore everybody senseless with "this is its legs, this its arse and this might be the head...".
Whatever - good luck - its a daunting but brilliant experience.

Interesting to know, however, after looking at the site, that this process can also help in screening for Downs Syndrome. We had a real quandry over this - my sister was born with Downs, she died when she was three, and I was seven. My wife and I really didn't know what to do about this, but we went with the amniosentisis anyway for our little (9lbs !) one, even understanding the risks, but not realising there was an alternative. At the end of the day, what is meant to be, will be, as they say. What ever you two have, you will love it as your own, and thats the important thing. She turned out, for a short time, to be a very special sister to me.

I've heard that if the mum-to-be puts weight on mainly at the front then it tends to be a boy, and a girl if she puts on weight all over. This was certainly the case with my wife for all 3 of our boys.
I nearly got into trouble with this theory with a girl I used to work with though. I predicted a girl as she had put weight on all over. When I told her my reasoning she seemed put out as she had only thought she had put weight on at the front. She had a girl.
I guess there will be others who have heard the opposite though.

Id have to go with the majority here, we were asked if we wanted to know before my daughter ( now 7 months)
was born and nope we waited for the end..
mind you the nhs scans are terrible compaired to what you can get privatly
a mates wife had the downs scare from the first scan and it was going to be 2 weeks before they could have another look, so my mate paid the 400 quid and the video (in colour) they got the next day was amazing
great to watch after a few pints....

Personally I wouldn't want to know, but if its just to find out the sex, I'm sure you could ask the operator at one of the later scans to have a look.
As has been posted many times before, if its for a medical reason, pay the cash!

Would you peek at all your presents before Christmas? Probably not.
So wait and see - much nicer that way! Scans will never be 100% accurate, anyway - I've heard of several couples that "knew" they were having a boy and ended up with a girl, for example.
What's more, my brother and his girlfriend knew from blood tests (100% accurate - can't argue with chromosomes!) that they were having a boy, and she was induced. Took all the fun out of it when my mum phoned in the early morning to tell me she'd had a boy - there was a definite "I know, I know..." factor about it.
And anyway, they tell me lilac and lemon are in this year. No, best to wait and see IMHO unless there are medical reasons for knowing.
Spend the £400 on a nice piece of jewellery for the proud mum once the little one's born!
