Sorry for the monumentally boring question, but we're considering an E46 3-series to replace my 911. We've got twins arriving this September and I am wondering whether the boot is big enough for the average twin buggy. I had a E46 coupe a few years ago, and the boot always seemed pretty big.

Any help/commiseration greatly appreciated

It should fit, but not much else will after that. The main reason I switched fromt eh CSL to the M5 was the fact that we have one baby coming and the boot is much bigger.

Don't know kow big a twin buggy is compared to a mono-kid one, mate but buggies, pram chassis, bikes with the wheels taken out all fit in the boot of my Touring (with the rear seats up). Having had an E46 saloon too, boot footprint is not dissimilar in the Touring, just higher. Both are bigger than the coupe. Good luck.

Thanks chaps.

Maybe it'll have to be a *spit* Vectra, and then a more fun car.

We were looking at 3 vs 5 as we've got a little one on the way (only the one). As already stated, although the 3 might accomodate the buggy / travel system, it's whether there will be enough room for anything else. One look at the boot on the 5 and it was an easy decision.

Just spotted a nice 5-series Touring...I was hoping to avoid buying an estate, though! It's bad enough having to sell the Porsche, let alone get a bloody old man's car

You will need something bigger than the 3 series. We struggle to get the twins and all associated gear in an X5 and when we had a 3 series courtesy car it was a joke. The mamas and papas twin aria puschair went in the back but as per earlier comments not a lot else. Good luck with the twins....they will be hard work but great fun

5 boot 'tis indeed very big. In addition to all the baby junk, Ive found it to easily accomdate massive gearboxes that I keep aquiring.

had an x5, swapped to an e46 touring, got 2 kids 1 dog, you wouldn't want to go smaller but it copes no problem. and i like to drive it much more than my x5's.

The M5's boot is massive. I have folding seats as well and the only things I can't carry are objects that won't fit through the boot lid.

Thats interesting, we are considering chopping in the 3 touring for either a 5 touring or an X5 (another baby on the way). Is there any more space in an X5 than a 3?

Not sure the kids will appreciate having the seats folded on top of them, but I will ask.

I'd love to, but I have to start putting cash away for school fees!

Mike,

Grab yourself a E46 330i Sport Touring (PETROL, not weasel). Give it a couple of mild tweaks and I think you'd be a happy man.

The boot takes a load of stuff and with four adults and the assoc gear, she still shifts rather nicely...if you are local to Fleet or Guildford, feel free check ours out.

Why don't you do what I did, and get your wife the large estate car and keep the 911, or swap it for something cheaper but enjoyable for yourself.

next up is a supercharger...330bhp 330i Sport Touring/Estate...even better for leaving the sports car folk wondering what the heck just happened to them.
