My R1 is in for a service and I was given a Yahama FZ1 as a loan bike.

The FZ1 has only done 100 miles but it was so easy to ride especially doing the City commute. The low down power is very useable and there is no need to rev the engine too much when pulling away from traffic lights. Mid range power is also very useable inflowin traffic. Even though the FZ1 is some 20kg heavier than the R1 it doesn't feel heavier at all and is surprisngly nimble with a good riding position. The transition from sports bike riding position to a naked bike and upright riding position was fairly easy too.

Downsides: I thought the brakes were a tad too spongy with not much initial bite, but that could be due to glazed pads and the fact I'm used to radial calipers, braided lines and Bendix MRR pads, basically an easy fix, change lines & pads and job done.
The foot pegs are rubber mounted which flex too much for my liking, but they are probably there to stop vibration and I presume there could be an easy fix for this if you don't mind the vibraton too much. The engine felt a little flat in the higher gears but this could be due to the bikes engine being very tight as it's still virtually brand new.

In all I was quite surprised with the bike and it got me thinking that I could easily get on with one of these.

Andy.

I really like the styling of the FZ1 and, like you, have considered it as a replacement for my R1.

But, the though of having to wash it every week with the headers picking up the road crud doesn't fill me with glee

Also, my commute is a 100 mile round trip, so fuel capacity is a concern. That said, I get 175 miles to a tank out of the R1 (traffic precludes wide open throttle action).

Consider a Hornet 919 ... its the Honda FZ1 of the R1 (derived from the Honda fireblade).

All the fun without the back ache and racing riding posture, I test rode a Daytona 675 last week, I just couldn't live with asports bike on everyday roads ...

The Hornet 900 has a silky smooth torquey engine, a joy to ride ....
