With imminent SVA, I just wanted to check a 'grey area' regarding my interior.

As I have the tweeters from my ICE install in the sides of the dash, are they exempt from the radius requirements of SVA?

The drivers side is anyway (I think?) as it's within the 127mm radius of the steering wheel, but that still leaves the passenger side one that could cause a problem?

Question is really whether the radiusing rule applies to things on the dash that aren't 'facing' you?

Any ideas?

The tweeters fit in the far left/right holes

Yes unfortunately I suspect they will be iffy.

On "my" SVA I got pulled for a fabricated ally bracket holding the speakers behind the dash. The examiner said - with no irony "if your head hit that in an accident it could get a nasty gash!" Yes it could, but I would have been more concerned about why the 6 point harness failed, and what the dash and the chassis rail behind it did to my head first. It was easily sorted with some rubber edging but is shows how "stupid" some of the rules are. As an aside they even failed the standard Ultima Factory supplied Gearknob (G50 box) as the plastic insert which was raised above the main body of the knob was not adequately radiused!

I don't know how big the tweeters are but I got my additional oil temp gauge through by sticking the cut down lid of a can of brake cleaner over it - it had a nice radiused edge and was an exact fit so held itself in place. Comment on checklist was "removed." Perhaps you might be able to find something similar in the garage?

Thanks Rubi - here's some close-ups of the speakers:

You can see the protrusion and edge here.

Not a massive problem to remove them, but would prefere to avoid it if possible!

That looks like a bacon slicer in the wrong hands! Or to be more accurate a side of the knee slicer or even grater. Can you not just stick some foam strip around it and pull it off afterwards?

lol - suits the hardcore nature of the car

Just as easy to remove them for the SVA rather than fiddling about with foam. Although, pipe insulation is a wonderful thing

You'll need to stick a deformable pad on the steering wheel as well. When I SVA'd my GTR the factory sent me a checklist of all the things to do for the SVA. Including sticking on rear reflectors, which the examiner said weren't radiused enough. So I stuck on a few layers of black insulating tape and he was happy.

But you know all this because you presumably went through it with your GTR, or did the factory do it for you?

The GTR was put through by the factory and so will the Can-Am. Just saving them the bother, therefore time, therefore 40 quid an hour labour

Don't forget the rear view mirror on the windscreen too!

I arged about that - said I'd see nothing in it and the excellent door mirrors made it unneccesary. He got all iffy quoted clause numbers and sub-clause numbers, I gave in fitted a stick on one (aero screen). He passed it and said, "can't see anything in that mirror can you!"

I have a personal view that anything like this where a fix is easy they will fail you on. If it might be a bit more difficult (emissions and noise spring to mind) they will find a way of getting a pass - if they like you / the car.

The Can-Am has a video camera feed of the rear view to a monitor in the dash

I'm glad I don't have to go through all this.

In Minnesota, I went into a DMV office, filled out some paperwork and paid my license fees. They had no idea what the car was. The lady behind the desk reached into a box and handed over two license plates and I went on my way. That's it!

If only!

The SVA is rather banal with some details, but it can depend on the mood of the inspector on the day. The dash rulings are a bit daft from a safety perspective. If I'd hit my head on the dash I'd be more concerned about why my 6 point harness had just snapped

They are especially pointless given that as long as it's legal for the test, you are then free to change it and it will still pass an MOT!

I especially like the one where I had to make my handbrake (parking/e-brake) operate the brake fluid warning light to show the bulb was working. Given that the two circuits are completely independent - it's not exactly foolproof!? Still, it does double as an idiot check to show whether you've neglected to release the handbrake (and this setup looks a lot better than the standard rocker switch).

Still, rules are rules.

Stig - now you got me wondering, I wasn't aware just how fussy they were ! What about your rear fog light ? It looks like the one I have (Savage? I have 4 of their switches). Given what's been said about SVA and radius etc. will that pass ? (My switches are located where you have your right hand tweeter). Also, what about your cigarette lighter ? My stereo sticks out a fair bit from the dash, does anyone know how the rules apply to that ? Better still, does anyone have a 'laymans terms' SVA ruling for the interior ?

I thought that arrangement fell foul of the legislation forbidding the fitting of TVs where the driver could see them?

The Savage switches are fine as long as you flush fit them. Anything that protrudes less than 3.2mm is exempt from the radius rule.

Cigarette lighter - simple, remove.

Stereo - have removed my head unit for SVA and covered hole with a blanking plate.

Basic SVA guide (feel free to correct me on this!) is that anything within 127mm radius of the steering wheel is exempt. Anything outside this must not protrude more than 9.5mm and must have a minimum 2.5mm radiused edge. If it does stick out more than 9.5mm, it must be mounted in such a way as to be able to collapse back into the dash or break off - with correct radius etc.

That's why I've also moved my aircon controls back under the dash for the time being. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find knobs with an acceptable radius!

Possibly, but it's not a TV. It's a view of the rear of the car. No more distracting than having a mirror?

Anyway, have decided to remove the head unit for SVA, so no monitor. Easy enough to stick a rear view mirror on for the test.

I think the concern is more about the dash coming to meet YOU!

My GTR kit is still 7 weeks from even arriving at the door and I'm reading the SVA manual like a horror novel!

Good choice chap

The AVIC-X1R is a top unit. Looking forward to getting the vehicle dynamics display setup too. I've also got the iPod interface and a reverse camera hooked up to it.

By the way, if you 'accidently' connect the handbrake wire to the headunit casing, you may find that you can play DVDs whilst driving Needless to say, I wouldn't recommned it...
