Hi folks, hope someone may be able to help.

My friend has started at a Recovery company and drives a 6.5t Iveco crewcab van with a spec lift, which is able to recover up to a long wheelbase sprinter type size van.

He passed his test in around 1989 and has car class entitlement and also enabales him to drive up to 7.5t lorry (class b and c1 I believe)

Is he OK to drive the Iveco when recovering a van??

I'm not sure, although he thinks it's fine (the company are fully aware of his licence details)

I've had a look on the DVLA's website for him, but don't seem to be able to make sense of it..

Any help apprieciated.

Not sure from Inf supplied whether towing vehicle equipped outright with lifting equipment (recovery vehicle straight tow) or a flat back with lift and total carrying capacity (goods).

From information supplied it would appear that Licence required could be

C1 + E with age of 21 and up.

Medium Sized vehicles with trailers
Lorries between 3500kg and 7500kg with a trailer over 750kg - total weight not more than 12000kg (if you passed your category B test prior to 1.1.1997 you will be restricted to a total weight not more than 8250kg).

It is indeed a mine field and I would suggest that your get the ruling of the ultimate licence issuing authority DVLA. They are on E Mail at

drivers.dvla@gtnet.gov.uk

(Towman (Steve) may well have a useful imput on this one.)

The towing vehicle has a spec lift, which is an arm the folds down and lifts an axle, ie the front wheels in the air, towed vehicles rear wheels running on road.
