It's usually something proprietary, generally lithium ion rechargables these days . . .

What Fergus said.

And I have to say they are SO much better these days. I'm getting 400%+ improvement over the D1 days of year 2000

Battery life is also determined by how well the processor handles the data. The 30D has a bigger screen than the 20D, (from what Ive read iirc) yet despite the bigger screen, battery life is up by 10%.

Do they take AA's though? or are they batteries that come with the camera?

Most camears don't take AA's. (about 99% if I had to guess). Nearly all cameras come with batteries designed for the camera. AA's just don't cut it I'm afraid. I had a Digital Camera in 1998 that took 4 AA's and it shot about 40 frames before they were all spent. My D2X battery will take about 2000 and then recharge in 90 mins - and do about 1000+ charges (they say)

In 1998 your rechargable AAs were probably only had a capacity of 900 - 1100mAh and were relatively expensive. Advances in battery manufacture mean that modern rechargable AA batteries are cheaper and routinely have twice that capacity.

The 990 and 995 Nikon Coolpix were among the top selling cameras 5 - 6 years ago. They use AAs.

Aye but it's all about energy density, eg, the battery in my slr is 11.1V 1900mAh (21Wh) and it's marginally smaller than 4 AA batteries . . . which at say 1.2V and 2000mAh (*4) is only 9.6Wh . . . so that's a lot less oomph given the size . . . which is, of course, why everybody is moving towards lighter, higher energy desity batteries as it makes for more room in the camera.
