Hi Guys,

Just wondering what state everybody elses gearboxes in after all these years? Clunky or smooth as a babies bum? What have people been doing over the years to keep them in good shape?

Well I'm ashamed to say mine is a bit dodgy

Stiff to get into 2nd when cold and crunchy if i lean too heavy on the stick. Hopefully just needs fresh oil and a bush or two. So how's yours Matty?

Smooth is never a word I would use to describe the Rover box. Had mine rebuilt 3 or 4 yrs. ago, and they discovered that the oil pump was shot - the gears are nylon IIRC. Frequent oil changes, with the correct fluid, and don't rest your hand on the shift when not using it is about all you can do. Plus making sure the plastic bushes on the remote housing are in good shape, together with adjusting the side to side play of the shift lever to a minimum. And when its cold I tend to go from 1st straight to 3rd to avoid crunching.

Agree with the above. Mine is still ok, as the doubts/noises I had were linked to other stuff (gearlinkage bushes, brake pad noise, etc.). Now done 170.000km, but will have it overhauled as the lever operating the clutch gave up. Use standard gearbox oil and not the girly ATF. Renew it at least every year. When cold 1st to 3rd (only when outside temperature goes down to freezing point), when warm (not cold at night)it is a good box with a solid feel(but needs a clutch to work properly). ATF can be fine, but the seals are made for standard gearbox oil. ATF can leak out, even if you don't use it! Have a rover sd1 were the gearbox went because the ATF went 'missing' during the previous ownership. Topping up and regular checking will probably keep it alive for a long time.
When you change the oil you can do two checks:
The plug is magnetic and will hold metal loose parts. If the parts are small (like sand), no problems. The oil/ATF itself: clear = no issues. Dark and like metallic paint.....
It is worth a change anyway: not expensive, only a bit fiddly to refill (try to get as much as possible in).
