letting in water

Firstly, sorry to hear about Graham's problems with water/engine and by all accounts from what I'm reading the damage is not too severe. With the recent rain I can now say that having applied Fabsil to the soft top and the rubber seals that no water has entered and the cockpit is now quite dry (the seals seem to have swollen making it a little harder to secure the panels but prefer this to the leaks I had). However, a real shock when I came to fill up with petrol. Opened the filler cap only to see water lapping around the filler neck, so not sure if any found its way into the tank. The design looks so stupid in that it looks to me that water levels can easily build up around the filler neck and at a certain level will discharge into the tank when you open the cap to fill up. Am I right in what I'm saying, anyone else experienced this potential problem. What symtoms can I expect if I have got some water in the tank, will the injectors just spit it out?

Surely there is a drain hole at the bottom of the filler cap recess??

I can't help, sorry, but mine has exactly the same problem so looking forward to the responses. I haven't ever noticed a drainage hole. I tend to carry a leather and mop it up with that if I'm caught in a shower. Clearly I'm very very careful when hosing down as weel.

Mine also did this, but I just made sure that I absorbed it with some paper towel whenever I noticed it. The rubber seal around the filler cap should prevent any water entering the tank - that is until you open it!

A small quantity of water in the fuel tank shouldn't be a problem as the fuel will float on top of it (the fuel takeoff pipe shouldn't be at the lowest point of the tank to allow for this). The water will accumulate over time though as it has no means of escape.

My V8 has a drain hole too if I remember correctly.

I do get a small amount of water collect in the recess but never gets so much as to get into the fuel tank.

The recess definately has a drain hole directly below the bottom of the cap which leads through a rubber pipe out the bottom of the boot behind N/S wheelarch.Think its the front one of the three tubes sticking out.
Mine dumped water into the boot until I found the spiggot bonded into the wing below the cap had broken off so the hose had come free and water drained into boot.
Glued and siliconed it back in a couple of years ago, bit of a pig as petrol tank fill tube is inthe way,but its been fine since.

Suggest you check yours, and if still intact,then gently push a straightened wire coathanger through it as it is blocked.
