Hi all

I am completely ignorant of wireless LAN and so have a couple of questions;

My dad has a laptop with broadband connected to the wall via cable which is via a broadband modem.

When he connects to the internet via the broadband it appears as a network with fixed IP addresses (in the TCP/IP settings, if that makes sense).

ANYWAY, very often he is using his laptop (it is his, afterall) and I want to use the connection with my work laptop, but can't. To get my work laptop to access it I simply plug in the network cable from the modem, and change the IP addresses to match those on my dad's computer. Works a dream.

My question; what hardware would be needed to enable wireless connection? My work laptop has a wireless network card so I assume I just need a 'transmitter' from the broadband modem of my Dad?

So...what would be needed, how much would it cost, and could we both use the internet at the same time?

Thanks all, and sorry for the ignorance of my questions!
Tony

www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=43473&doy=7m4

basically that's all you need (that's the one I have). You connect that to your modem and turn everything on .... the set up is straightforward.

Make sure your Dad's laptop also have a wireless card, or else you'll need one of these too:

(it just slides into the PCM slot onthe side of the computer).

Thanks!

So is the wireless card for my dad's purely so he can do wireless, not to transmit or anything like that?

He won't ever use it, it's only for me so I can wander round the house with it!

If you have a wi-fi laptop, all you need is the router.

Your father can continue to just plug into a cable (but it will go to the router now and from there to the modem instead of directly to the modem). Alternatively he can also use the wireless router wirelessly, but he will need that card if he has a non-wi fi compter.

(By the way, the nice thing about that particular router is that it's pretty well rounded - at home I have a desktop connected by wire to it; my laptop wirelessly and the two share a printer via it. I've also had people round meaning all using laptops at the same time with pretty respectable speeds still - up to 4 computers connected at once).

Ok that's great thanks - so £70 and a quick set up bob's your uncle!

That's answered it fully, cheers!
