my first post, so hi all!

my question is how i should attack a full respray of my car? i've had good success with my small HVLP system on single panels, but i have never attempted a full respray.

the car i'm spraying needs minor work on nearly every panel, so i'm gonna do a full spray job. really i want to know how to deal with the doors, tailgate and bonnet as i'm gonna remove them and spray them inside and outside, to ensure a uniform colour throughout the vehicle (except engine bay of course).

the only real way i can think of is to hang the doors etc off the car and spray both sides at once. how would i go about this without damaging anything, ie distorting a panel under it's own weight or other such error?

if any of the more experienced amongst you have any tips or trade secrets you are willing to share, i would greatly appreciate knowing in advance the do's and dont's. cheers

Hi,
I'm currently doing the same thing on my car except its a first time spray job, over gel coat, the way I'm doing it is first priming/undercoating the whole car then removing the doors etc, priming the edges and the back (which could be done with the panel lying down if you want) and the rebates on the body,
then making sure that all the topcoat is mixed together reverse the procedure i.e. finish the backs/edges and rebates, rehang the doors fit the boot etc and spray the whole lot.

Its worth bearing in mind that every time you open the tin its a good idea to stir the paint thoroughly this will help stop any pigment settling if its left a while between coats

good luck

Are you there Eddie, what do you think ?

hi hal, cheers for the suggestions, only problem is i'm using a polyurathane base/clear system which is gonna complicate the process you describe, ie. that the rear doors will be back on and blockin some of the sills when i come to spray the clear. that's why the only way i can think of is to finish the base off the car, and then put back together at clear stage.

Best way is to spray doors, bonnet, boot lid all off the car - base coat and clear. Spray car body separately. Doors etc have to be hung or suspended.
