I suspect that my speedo is reading about 15% high by doing speed checks against known car speeds and known lengths. While this is not a problem my car K'm is going up faster than real. Does anyone know how this can be adjusted.

Also I would like to get the parts list and workshop manual for my car 1990 Non SE turbo. Is Lotus-Books.com the best source and do you need both ??.

Calvin/Jim,

Do you know the torque settings for the rubber mounts that you discussed a few weeks ago?. Also I can see the back 2 mounts, where are the others located (transmission mounts ??) - are they access from the engine bay or underneath??.

Regards

Jason

The only easy way is to take the speedo to a shop for re-calibration. I have seen an opened a speedo before but needs to have a tool reseal it as it has a curled lip much like a beverage can. It is possible to alter the speedo gears with one with a different number of teeth. I believe currently that the speedo drive gear in your car has 26 for the drive and 21 for the driven. The only thing is the check the size of tire and wheel you are using. There will be deviation for tire wear but that will be slight. I normally do 2 checks on a given hwy mile marker painted on the pavement. I drive at 60 mph and cover the measured mile in 1 minute, as I pass the marker I make note of both the trip and odometer to check for the measured mile. All checks out okay on my car.

You would need both books used in pairs to make things easy on yourself. The service manual almost assumes you are really familiar with an Esprit. While the service book has the tolerances and specifications, the parts book has the exploded diagrams of every section of the car. Many times the service manual refers to things like remove, inspect, and replace as nessesary. Many people then write to one of us and ask us "How the heck does one do that?"

Funny you should ask about where to buy the manuals. I'm not sure where the best place to get them as I got my set as a gift from a really nice guy (Graham Smith) in Austraila for the price of shipping and few drinks at the local pub. I can not thank him enough for these books. I have read these books many times and commited many sections to memory before I did the actual proceedures. It has helped me very much and shortened the learning curve of the SE. While I have general knowledge of the Esprit line, with the help of Keen Young I am pretty fair with the Delco injected 4 cyl. S body cars. Jim is pretty good with the turbo G cars, now if we could only get Tim Engel to visit here regularly for N/A guys this would be an awesome site. It's getting better all the time. If a few more V8 guys start working on their own cars that would be nice too.

Engine mounting legs to rubbers 55-60 N.m or 40-45 ft. lbs.
Engine mounting legs to engine 18-29 N.m or 14-15 ft. lbs.
Mounting rubber to chassis 34 N.m or 25 ft. lbs.

Transmission mounts are accessed from under the car or with the trunk floor removed.

My speedo is also reading incorrectly , when I am doing
90 it is realy 80mph. And it has now died all together

I can get this done , I live in North Wales.
