but I really need some advice! So I'm looking to buy a DSLR. I've tried out quite a few and I'm now stuck between a Canon 20D and a 350D. My limit is £800, so I can get either a 20D with the 18-55mm lens kit or a 350D body but buy a better lens for it. My problem is I don't know much about lenses. I definatley need a zoom lens. I'll be photographing cars a lot too (like at the Gumball soon, and shows) so I need something that is good for that. Can anyone reccomend a good lens for around £250 that would be a good choice for me? I can't/don't want to buy from the internet so preferably something that I can buy at Jessops or Jacobs or a place like that.

How good, or bad is the 18-55mm lens that comes with 20Ds? I don't want to waste money on a more expensive lens if it isn't significantly better in some way than the 18-55. Also, is there any difference in the image quality of a 20D and a 350D? I can't decide if the 20D is worth the extra money or not - it feels more comfortable to hold, and I could use some of the extra features on it, but I guess I could live without them too. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

What are the extra features on the 20D that you think you might be interested in using ?

I'm no expert on canon lenses (or Nikon ones for that matter!), but I can't see how £800 leaves you enough money after buying a 350D body to buy a lens substantially better than the 18-55 kit lens.

I like that it can shoot more franes persocond, and I could really use that too. Also the fact that I can control the aperture and shutter speed simultaneously on the 20D. It feels nicer to use, where the 350D is a little small and light.

I guess the D70s is an option too - I'm not sure how good it is though really.

Well, now the 30D has arrived the prices on 20D's are going to drop fast I'd bet. You say you want a zoom (I'm thinking you really mean telephoto) but for cars shows and basically anything up to 20ft away you'll be fine with the standard lens. Now if it's shooting cars from the side of the track that's a different matter...

You can go far wrong with a 20D. Just don't pick up a 1DmkII. Ask V6GTO why

20D shoots faster and focuses better in low light. its also more rugged(and bigger), has the LCD info screen at the top rather than back, apart from that there almost identical.

As for changing shutter and apature together you can do that on a 350d, just only has one wheel so you need to press(and hold) a button to switch bettween Ap and shutter.

Typicaly though you'll only be adjusting one not both anyhow.

You'll need a different focal length for shooting cars a few feet away to cars 100+ yards away. How far away is an issue you have to consider, a 70-300 or 70-200 would be ok untill the cars are within 15 meters or so I think.

The 18-55 kit lens is the same on both, its cheap and plastic, but its OK if stopped down to f9 or so, wide open its soft (above F11 or so you'll get soft pics on APS-C cameras anyhow).

A 350d should set you back £450 with the kit lens, leaving you £350 which can get you the canon 70-400 f3.5 IS , decent zoom that has possible issues in portrait over 200mm.

Thanks for the replies.

Well I'm thinking that between the two Canons the 20D would be better for me. I haven't really heard anything good about the 18-55 that comes with it but I guess it'll have to do for starters.

What about the D70s? I don't know a lot about Nikons, I've just read the review of the D70 on dpreview and it seems good but I don't really know how it is compared to the 20D. Does anyone think it's in some way better, or has any advantages over the 20D? Also, what is the 18-70mm lens that comes with it like, compared to Canon's 18-55?

The canon 18-55 gets slated, but IMO its not that bad, especialy for 30 quid and its range, 18-55 is very handy on aps-c. Its soft if wide open but sharp enough at f9 to produce some decent images.

The Nikon D70 has been overshadowed by the D50 somewhat as the 50 is newer and in some respects better. I've heard the nikon kit lens is better quality than the canon.

So as not to make another thread, I emailed Jacobs and they don't have any 20D's in stock. They only have 20D B-stock kits, which are £699.99.

"The kit is still brand new and not sold and returned.
We had a batch which was not complete and some which canon UK would have
used to test lenses on.
The cameras are individually inspected by Canon and are still a UK Spec and
the drivers and manuals which were not in the box have been put in.
The camera kit only comes with a 6 month warranty as appose to a 12 month
warranty."

Should I be wary of anything when buying this? I've never come accross this before
