Electrical issue

Well people do say Cebera's can benefit from everyday use. I left mine parked at Stansted for 3 days and had some fun problems driving home at 1am this morning.
First of all the water temperature guage has gone mental but the bigger problem is this; the big black bundled wire that leads to the Ignition Control Unit in the boot seems to have an intermittent connection. The sypmtom was that I would be driving along merrily and then suddenly, all power would die, oil and battery light would be on, rev counter not reading anything, interior lights around the heater knobs flickering and a clicking noise from the boot area.
I noticed that if I moved the ICU black wire that it created the rapid clicking noise and in a certain position, all power would be restored and the fuel pump would start priming. Trouble was, if it was knocked from the good position then I would come grinding to a halt. Managed to get it home OK after about 4 such incidents.
Anyone experienced a similar problem before with this wire? Big fuse was replaced not so long ago just in case people were thinking that this was the problem.

In order to get to this hypothesis I had to carefully read your posting twice. Please let me know if this is the right answer.
I don't think that is the case actually.
If I was to guess, I would have said the problem was a dodgy wire connecting the ICU.
Admittedly I did come to the same conclusion as you after reading twice, but on the fourth read through it became obvious...
Sorry. I have a tendency to ramble. You are both correct.
I'll post some pictures later. I'm in the middle of trying to individually wire them to the ICU as one of the connections had effectively burnt through and the connector block is fubarred.
