There was more to it than that, he wouldn't have 'damaged' his tyres just by doing what he did, but he would have had less grip until they were cleaned off. He got a poor start because of the dirty tyres and got bogged down and hit by Bruno Spengler going into turn 1 forcing him to retire. If he had got thriough turn 1 in one piece he would still have been in about 5th place and in a good position to finish well.
