The mystery is solved. After speaking to a bloke who does APK (compares to MOT) over here he said it's to dampen the intake noise. So, the next move will be to get rid of this annoying intake noise damper. Can't have my intake sound dampened, can we.

Blimey got a question right for once , if you check the last response to the original question. There should be a marginal gain from removing it (probably not noticeable though ) but best of all, it should improve the induction roar .

Can anyone tell me why you would dampen the intake noise, when you've got a V8 TVR and a sports exhaust!

Since when was the intake noise at the front an issue on the pre-Cat Griffith ??? there isn't really any, well not that you can hear over the exhaust,
Go on open it, just to check whats inside.
