I know this subject has been flogged to death (I have spent a couple of days trawling through all the old posts!), but I can't find any specific information relating to the different acceleration times of the two models. With all the talk of severe turbo lag, I would have expected the S2 to be quicker off the mark and up to about 40mph. The only information I have found though (www.porsche924.tmfweb.nl/technisch/9x4_performance.htm) has both cars neck and neck up to when the turbo kicks in... Is this right? Perhaps those of you with experience of both/either could clarify this for me.
It's not a huge deal, but I am torn between the two and would like to have every piece of info I can gather to help sway my indecisiveness one way or another!

I can't see where an S2 is going to be quicker in outright acceleration as it should be on boost pretty much the whole time. It's probably a bit easier to get off the line without the on/off nature launching a turbo car. Having said that, 944Ts have great traction off the line compared to turboed FWD hatches and you don't need to slip the clutch that much.

Having owned both cars previously. I would opt for the 944 turbo again.

Try and get yourself a 944 Turbo SE with 250 BHP and if possible the M030 pack.
The S2 is more of a GT type cruiser with plenty of torque and poke when needed.

The Turbo is a modifiers dream, lots of mods available and cheap too. You can easily uprate your car to a monster.

All in all the Turbo has more flexibilty and offers a bit more rarity.

I've owned a 944t and two 968's (which are very close to a 944S2 in the way they drive).

The only time I found turbolag a problem was in pulling away from a standstill. It sounds trivial until you're trying to join a fast moving roundabout or A road. In the wet.

Either you pull away off- boost like gran in a Micra, and get passed by every brat in a Saxo. Or you give it more throttle. Then it goes like a Micra for 10metres, until the boost builds and you wheelspin up (or off) the road. This is one reason why most people reckon the S2 or 968 is a better daily drive.

BTW the effect of the turbo means the 944t will feel faster than the figures tell. It would take a very very good driver on a clear road to pull away form an S2 in give or take going.

Yup, I am with shoestring. My 944 T cab feels exactly like that. When at a standstill, you feel slightly foolish that you don't feel like you're doing the claimed 5.3 to 60mph. Of course, when the Turbo kicks in its 5.3 seconds to 60mph!

I've owned 944T and 944 S2 (albeit cabrio) and driven 968s galore inc CS.

The 944T felt noticeably faster than any of them acceleration wise.

The one I'd now to choose to own is the 968CS tho'.

If you want to keep it standard go for an S2 if you want to modify it go for a turbo.
Most turbos will suffer a weak wastgate by now, and as such boost will suffer, upgrade to a dual port Tial and you will get you boost back plus the option to go for more (with chips / fuel pressure regulator/ boost control and monitoring)
I modded a friends healthy (250BHP) 944t with chips/wastegate/fpr/boost guage/EBC probably around £1000 - £1200 worth of kit and it produced circa 320BHP 370ft/lbs on the weltmister dyno. (standard turbo / exhaust)
I would add some air fuel monitoring (which is easier on 90 on cars) but even with wideband you should be looking at less than £250.00

PS forgot to add mods also improved the driveability and fuel economy, (possibly because you cant keep you foor down so long).

Thanks to all for taking the time to reply!

Turbo was (and still is!) my first choice - although I will give myself a little 'bedding-in' time before I start looking to enhance boost etc (need to get used to having a little power under-foot after 5 years of Saab driving!)

All I need to do now is keep on with the search, which is proving to be rather painstaking! Plenty of S2's about (particularly cabrio), but not nearly as many good late Turbo's (for a budget of approx £8k)

Again thanks for all the advice!

This sounds like a nice car.

I have had a few of both of these i would go for the 944 turbo its the most under estimated porsche ever made the 3.2 carrera was a good car but the 944 turbo was faster and handled better
