I think most people graduate from one to the other until they get too loud and stop!
From a performance perspective, it makes only a marginal difference, and the general PH wisdom has it that de-cat and standard back-box works best.
Beyond that, there are many who feel that de-cat AND sports pipes is too much for any apart from the die-hards. you know who you are!
Of course, driving the quietest Cerb on the planet, as I do, I don't even get flames despite having a de-cat!

My understanding was that with a decat and standard backbox, the backbox disintegrates fairly quickly. Then a new one is more expensive than the sports pipes.
My personal journey has been:
1) Bought car with cats and sports pipes (previous owner must have found out the price of standard backbox)
2) One of the cats disintegrated. £300 each for new cats, or £135 for the linked decat pipes.
It's actually 10dB louder (119dB vs 109dB) with the linked decats in place, but for some reason it seems quieter IMHO.

regarding getting done without cats, never heard of it - as for the boys in blue, they know TVR's are noisey.

I have the std manifolds/cats and link pipes, along with the ACT Sports Tails. This is more than loud enough and pops and bangs like mad!!!!! (Just ask DougC and Leg1 who were behind me on the way to Mid Essex)
It fits well, looks good and is affordable, plus I have kept hold of the std backbox just in case I ever need to put it back on!

i've got a stainless sports rear section and upon stripping it all down yesterday i found out that there are no cores in the cats either .To be perfectly honest its a little louder than i would like
, though all the pops, bangs and general unrulyness on the overrun is amusing 
I'm expecting problems at Oulton on trackdays so i may have to investigate some intermediate boxes before then
