Blimey, is that really the case? What's the £10 a month subscription for?

Only costs a tenner if you have the most basic sky packages. Movies or sports gets you sky+ for free.

Oh right. Was curious to know if there's a way of getting Sky+ (or some means of recording) on a fairly basic package.

Sky charge a £10 premium for Sky Plus unless you add movies etc. Alternatively, Sony do a range of Freeview decoders with a choice of HD's, DVD burner (for archiving those series you recorded) and the option of 1 or 2 tuners. If you can live with Freeview and a Top Up TV card then I reckon it's a better option than Sky financially and because you can burn off stuff you want to keep long term.

Ahh, you'd be better off with a freeview PVR box maybe? Sky+ is good though. I've just got my install date for SkyHD on 22nd May. Shame it's another tenner a month

Is that really the case... Buy one off Ebay, plug and play..?

They are sellinbg for peanuts on Ebay compared to the £199 Sky want to charge..!
I pay the full £42 subscription as well, but don't have Sky+..!

Where's the catch..?

No catch. That's what I did when my box went kaput. You have to call sky and get the box associated with your viewing card and get sky+ enabled. As long as you're on a top package then the sky+ functionality will be free.

You'll need a quad-output LNB (the bit that's stuck on the front of the dish) too, if you don't have one, and another cable run from it to the box. Necessary as the thing has two tuners so it can do live TV and record something else at the same time. Easy to DIY though.

Surely you mean dual output? Mine's dual not quad, quad's for when you want two sky+ boxes.

Either would work. You can get an eight way as well for full future proofing. Either way I omitted to mention that for full sky+ functionality you need a minimum of two feeds per box. Sorry.

The extra £10 per month (if applicable) is to give you the second feed with the same package as your primary. Same with multi-room (which is why they usually fit a quad LNB rather than a twin).
