Went to Spa this weekend. First trip...what an awesome track.
Fantastic fun and very challenging.
Just thought I would give my initial thoughts on the new toyo r888. Its only been out in the 285 size on an 18inch rim for a couple of weeks apparently.
Ive got 225/40/18 and 285/30/18s. They were £700 fitted.
I have only had previous experience with Dunlop SSRs which were fairly grippy and long lasting.
The grip was amazing. They felt 10 times better than the ssrs. I was pushing on pretty well by the end of the day and they werent even squealing. Turn in was pin point with no understeer whatsoever.
Had some great chases with Steve, (paulburrell) and felt really confident on the tyres.
Not sure about road noise though...as soon as they went on the car seemed to make a whining droaning sound between 70-90mph. Will take them off this weekend to check ..hopefully thats all it it.
Also cannot comment yet on wear rate. They didnt look too bad after one day of hard driving, but they do seem very soft and sticky, so if I can get 4/5 track day out of them Ill be chuffed.

Very useful feedback, thanks. I also use Pirelli Corsas which I think feel slightly better than Dunlop SSRs, well in the dry anyway. It would be good to see how these Toyos compare with the Pirellis. To be honest, I am surprised how much better you thought the Toyos were compared to the Dunlops.

Out of interest, have you ever run on the 'Pirelli Corsa Track' tyres? That is what I am currently using and they are superb but much more expensive. If the Toyos are comparable, I will be very interested....

no I havent, nearly did. Steve (paulburrell)was on Pilot Sport cups though, and we were running very close the whole time. I would say I felt I had a little more grip than him though. However, he was on wet-cut cups and they were 265s on the rear too.
I would guess the grip is as good but its just the uncertain wear rate im not sure about. I'll know more in a couple of months after some more track days.
I would agree with Tif that the Toyo's certainly seem to have a tremendous amount of grip. The big question is how long they will last. If they last as many trackdays as the Cups before they become illegal for the road then at £700ish a set both Pirelli and Michelin will have to raise their game or sharpen their pencils.
Would agree with Tif that Spa was a hoot, as was the trip down. Apparently some locals reported that as number of Porkers were seen travelling in excess of 180 mph on a public road

, lucky buggers, wish I could go that fast.The wear rates for track hatches etc that have run both A048 & the 888 is that the 888 lasts far less, fronts been eaten in a day on a couple of cars, but they are waaaay cheaper.
Dunno how the compound compares for little 15 inchers vs in big pork sizes, but will be interesting to see how you get on with them.

Interesting to hear about the R888s. With regards to the wear rate, the Toyo RA-1s had a very soft compound with a UTQG rating of only 40-50. Corsas have a UTQG rating of 60, and the MPSCs at 80. I wouldn't be surprised if the R888s have a rating similar to the RA-1s which give them their levels of dry grip. But will they wear as long as the Corsas? Hmmm....

Yep - the Corsa Track tyres come with about 5 to 5.5mm of tread when new. I only used one of those cheapy Halfrauds tread depth gauges but its close enough... We'll have to see how long they last then

The sticky, road legal motorsport ones designed for track days...

Probably but they are designed to be road tyres... I assume that with track tyres, you want less tread depth to avoid tyre squirm. Also - the track tyres certainly are sticky when up to temp!

The systems are the same compound, they've just got more rain clearance channels so safer on the road. Definitely sticky enough for my tastes on track. Also cheaper, so I'm fairly happy with them, although if toyos last as long it's a no brainer

Surprised me too, and unfortunately I can't find the pdf file they released explaining it all with a comparison between the motorsports and the systems in terms of dry grip vs wet grip vs noise etc.
I have however found how much tread the systems ship with, and it is 4.7mm (6/32"

Anyway they are cheaper than the motorsports and offer only a bit less grip as far as I can tell. Also better in standing water which is an upside for me as I use my car on the road a fair bit.
