I will be doing this trip overnight on Friday (so as to catch the 7am ferry from Kennacraig.

Normally when going to Scotland, I'm going to the East Coast and I'd take the A1/A68 but obviously that's not practical on this occasion. So I guess the route will be M40, M6, Glasgow, Rest and be Thankful etc.

Anyone know of any areas along this route to avoid (dreadful roadworks etc) or particular camera hotspots I should be aware of?! Not living in the UK means that I am not up to date on such matters.

Cheers!

Glasgow has major roadworks on the M8 at the River Cart Viaduct at Glasgow airport, however given the time of day you will be travelling, in all truth there shouldn't be any problems.

Note however there is a 40mph speed limit on this section of road, and there a temp speed camera's set up to catch you...beware

Hi, once you come down from the rest on the way there there's a long straight fast bit but the police are there nearly all the time so take it easy along there. What car are you coming in, I'll keep an eye out, I'm from Tarbert (about 5 miles from Kennacraig)

Edit: Forgot you were travelling in middle of night, no chance police will be out then!!!

Cheers. Well got there and back safely. Hope no fines arrive in the post!

I was in my Z1. If you live in Tarbert then I hope I didn't wake you up at 5.30am on my way past to Kennacraig! I was rather conscious that I was making rather an unholy din through sleeping lochside villages. The car has a modified 4 exit exhaust which isn't remotely quiet at the best of times and seems to get noisier and noisier over long journeys, especially when it has stone cottages to echo off.

Marvellous roads on the A83/A82 though. Had a fantastic drive back last Weds am along all the lochs in bight early morning sunshine with the lochs looking like mirrors.
