Hi guys,

Is this a good deal? Im with just BT line rental and pay as you go dial up with virgin at the moment. Need broadband with wireless access.

I can see that i have to pay line rental and a call plan to Talk Talk but would i still have to pay BT line rental if i went with another broadband supplier, ie BT or Wannodo?

Yes, you would have to pay BT line rental if you got broadband via Wanadoo, BT, Virgin etc - this is why the Talk Talk offer looks so good.

Personally, I'd wait. Hopefully this will kick off a raft of price cuts and similar offers.

Can't see how it can be a bad deal. £30 one off connection charge, £21 a month including calls(no doubt exclude 0845/0870/mob like all the others do).
40Gb "fair usage" limit but ok for most people would have thought.

I heard that for speed they're quoting 'as fast as possible' up to and including 8Mb?

Only in Inner London, elsewhere 2MB. As BT upgrade their exchange, then 4-8MB could become more widespread.
18 month contract sign up and calls to EU, USA/Canada/Australia are included (landlines) and to mobiles in UK/USA/Canada.
Not a bad deal but will result in USB ADSL modem, which are notoriously crap. If they provide Ethernet modems, then that'd be much better.

BT have upgraded most of their exchanges to what they are calling ADSL MAX. They have successfully kept this very quiet though.

Go to http://samknows.com/broadband/ to see if your exchange has been upgraded.

From what I understand, they are spending £60mil putting their own equipment into BT exchanges by this time next year. This should give 8meg to 70% of the population.

So if our exchange is on the ADSL Max register this means that we can get 8MB ASDL?
Can we get it from BT now, cos I want it?

Just got to BT.com and click on BT Broadband - everything you need is there.

Not yet, until BT release the Bulk regrade tool for ISP's, ISP's can only regrade 800 users a day.

Basicallly, even though your exchange is enabled, your ISP has to apply to BT to 'regrade' your connection to the higher speeds.

Additionally, new connections will be put at the back of the queue depending on the ISP's policies.

I probably wont see my regrade for several months - as will many others - and I'm with PlusNet.

You need to register with BT
Don't register, don't get.
Be interesting to see when it arrives on my various ISP's
Also, may need to consider upgrading hub

Got mine from Freedom2Surf on 10th April - and the price dropped by £1/month. Full speed here as well, as I'm only 153.4m (must be as the crow flies) from the exchange.

Pity that they seem to have throttled NNTP/port119 connections at the same time though.

Another thing to consider is https://www.bethere.co.uk/ who are doing an LLU (local loop unbundling) service at 24Mb. Quite how they can provide this when the BT equipment can only do 8Mb, I don't know (fancy modem at the user end I guess). They are quoting August this year as the conversion date for our local suburban exchange. 24 Mb with unlimited download and free wireless modem seems suspiciously cheap to me.

I assumed AL666 is with BT. I live in a little tiny village in the middle of nowhere and I checked using my phone number and 6.5Mb is available to me. Last time I upgraded (from 0.5 to 2Mb) it only took a few days.

nah, I can't remember the company I'm with, to be honest, only a small one. I think they're called Mirage or something, they let us have 2meg ASDL, but at the time BT only said we could get 1meg.... so... er..... Don't know what's going on there

might have to ring BT to find out what they can do for us...

Type your phone number into the availability checker on BT's Broadband page (it's near the bottom so you to scroll down) and that'll tell you what should be available.

Thought you might like to know that Plusnet have started pre-registartion for their version of this... same price, same deal but rolling one month contract instead of tying you into 18 months as TalkTalk do -

www.plus.net

If you happen to sign up and would like to put me in a your referral, simply input 'thewants' and 'plus.com' in the little boxes. How kind!
