Just bought a D200!
Discussion
And i'm physically shaking with the thought of dropping £1375 on a camera! Bear in mind that my motorcycle cost £1500, and my car £350 and you can see where my priorities lie!
I bought it from ajpurdy.co.uk (who have 4 left) with the battery grip and extra battery.
I'm consoling myself with the notion that "it's an investment"

very nice camera
am seriously tempted myself - been looking at the D70s for ages now (and the canon 350D) and then this beauty came out. read some excellent reviews too. prob is - it's only a hobby, or it will be - so will i notice the difference in the pics from the D70s to the D200? reviews reckon not - apparently you'd need a quadrupling (sp) of the megapixel to notice a difference in picture quality (even at A3 size).
how have you found yours so far? good pics, easy to use? (i think i know you'll be pleased with it )

It's only a hobby for me too, but those who look at my website (www.davidhambly.co.uk ) tell me i'm not all that bad at it and i've started selling the odd print recently too. Also, work sent me to Albania recently to take portraits and were so pleased that they're sending me to Ukraine in 2 weeks - so I really need to have 2 digital bodies in case I get a problem with one (or lose it, or it gets nicked!). Hence, instead of buying another D70, i've taken it as an opportunity to upgrade at the same time.

Hi David
IMHO it's not the amount of pixels - it's all the functions that the camera brings. I have a D2X and often use Mrs Get's D50 and I only have twice the mega pixels she has (albeit on a bigger CCD) - the main difference is that on the D2X I can get into the guts of the functions really easily (very difficult on the D50) and I get better metering, faster frame rate, and come to think about it - better everything I can think of.
I can also bounce it off the floor without it breaking, it'll survive 100 times as long in the wet and the wind and will work in much more hostile temeratures.
The result is that more of my efforts are worth blowing up.
Having said that, if a camera is going to be left in 'P' mode - well then, a D200 is probably a waste of money over a D70.
As I say IMHO

Steve's right. It's all about what the mags call 'handling' - how easy it is to use, and get a shot that may only present itself for a second. If not for the fact that I want to carry two digital bodies, I wouldn't be able to justify the upgrade myself.
Steve> These things have a P mode? Genuinely never used it
(well OK, i use Aperture Priority a lot)thanks everyone - your advice is very helpful for a beginner like me. more real-world experience and pros and cons as opposed to reviews about clarity and colour definition etc which, TBH, leaves me a little baffled/overwhelmed.
i take on board the ease-of-use points. part of me is desperatly trying to justify the D200 as i do like to buy the best that i can afford. i know it's a better camera - what you're saying about build quality etc. just would hate to waste the money. also, have heard it's (ease of use aside) the lenses which really make for good pictures. so maybe, as the D200 plus standard lens is about as much as i can afford, the D70s with a few better lenses would be the option to go for.
and in the shops you can only handle the camers. now i'm sure they'll both feel good to handle, but you don't get to 'live with them' to see how they suit.
thanks again - i'll keep researching and looking around for now.

D70 + good lenses is a much better idea than D200 + junk lenses
