The PS2 is getting increasingly temperamental. Sometimes it will generate "disc read error" messages when trying to read a games disc (sometimes a dozen or more times in a row), others it will just play it first time.

On rare occasions it will freeze during FMV footage and need to be reset to play again.

Is this a sign of it detecting the imminent PS3 and starting to self destruct (my PS1 did that at the PS2 release lol) or might anyone have an idea as to whats wrong with it? (and potentially the cure?).

I have never had a PS2 (shocking I know) but I know a lot of people who have had problems with this sort of thing. It seems the laser pickup just generally wears out, gets dirty and generally goes out of tolerance. You can buy replacement modules that cure the problem.

I've tried using a lens cleaner. Looks like its time to wait for it to become terminal and grab a new one.

Not worth repairing at £50 considering current prices
