Does 99 octane make any noticable difference to the average driver?, would you notice the difference? obviously its costs more?

I use the Tesco 99 octane all the time. I can`t notice any difference between that and optimax. Apparently optimax has cleaning aditives in it. So I just put a fuel cleaner in every few tanks, still works out cheaper than optimax! Mine is a fussy drinker though and doesn't like any form of 95 octane!

Only questioned, due to the fact most drivers love Octimax at 98 octane.

Tesco do 99, but some divers wouldn't accept anything else but Optimax.

May be sending old questions out, but only got into the TVR obsession since November 2005.

I reckon my 4.0 runs better (marginly smoother at low revs) on tescos 99 than optimax.

Strangely the cold / warm-up cycle on my 450 seems to be better on the 99...

So some fuel Buffs say, Optimax is the best quality due to the cleaning additives used and then BP Ultimate.
Regarding the Octane rating. On a normally aspirated car like the RV8, if it is tuned for 98 octane then going any higher isnt gonna make any real performance improvements.
Going down to 95 is very likely to reduce performance a bit.
(Turbo cars however are a different story since many of their ECU's can adapt to the better octane fuel and improve performance accordingly)

Personally i think in an age old engine like the RV8 so long as the 99 octane stuff at Tesco's makes your car run ok i cant see any harm. Petrol is astronomically priced and any saving is worth it.
I put BP Ultimate in last weekend on the way back from Santapod at Toddington and my eyes nearly popped out of my head for how expensive it was.

I think regular servicing & oil changes etc are far more important than the difference between optimax and 99 Ron Tesco.

Just my 5p worth.

cheers,

Nick

My 450 Chim loves Tesco 99 better than Optimax or BP Ultima. Exhaust is crisper, burbles better, just nicer all round, and cheaper. BUT, I do put the odd tank of Optimax in every so often to keep everything clean,

I didn't think my 4.0l Chim popped and banged as much with Tesco 99 and it does on Optimax, which of course
IS A VERY BAD THING

I can't really tell the difference between Opti, Tesco's 99 or BP Ultimate. If the car even sniffs Texaco 97, it has a strop - more so that if fed with standard Unleaded.

My 450 says use 95 octane written around the fuel cap?? Always followed this instruction.

I agree with the above although havn't used the Tesco stuff yet as it hasn't reached these parts.

Shell garages are rare here also but there is little difference between BP ultimate and Optimax IMHO.

I'm always curious about this subject, David Batty says don't waste your money on super unleaded, so I don't. It runs fine on ordinary unleaded. When I'm out for a thrash I've put super in, Sainsbury's or Optimax, I honestly can't tell the difference, it runs great all the time and has so much power who knows? I suppose a rolling road comparison would be interesting, anyone have any facts?

Mine feels noticeably slower on BP ultimate than Optimax. Never tried the tesco stuff.

DOn't some cars have a "knock" sensor where they can advance the timing until they feel pinking.By doing this they can take advantage of the higher octane rating.? I'm fairly cerain my old 16v Sri had this. (non turbo)
