Changing CV boots - any tips?
Discussion
Ordered a replacement kit from TCS, arrived this AM (that was quick thanks Joolz).
Anyone done this job themselves and got any tips?
Also from memory the boots currently fitted are secured by cable ties but the kit comes with a large and small steel band (1 set per boot) which I pressume is to secure the boots.
Although I can see how they clip together I can't work out how they lock. I'm missing something obvious I know but any ideas?
Thanks
David

Jobs an easy un. Bolts either side until the halfshaft drops down. If the supply companies nice you will get the grease.
The ring comes off the end of each shaft and then the CV joint falls off in your hands.
Then put the gaiter on. (I once helped a Cerb owner who call for me because he couldn't get the gaiter over the CV Joint !!!!).
then in true haynes stylee, fitting is the reverse of removal.
P.S. only important bit is to leave the tying of the gaiter till after you put it back on the car.
This way you can see where to tie the gaiter with the least stress when the shaft is actually turning. That'll make more sense when your looking at it.
Good luck.

Thanks gents that makes sense.
Julian thanks for the info, my stupid pills haven't worn off yet so when you say "unbolt half shaft" which end? is at the diff or hub carrier? Oh and another one, yes the grease was supplied so am I right that I should pack the boot once I've slid it onto the halfshaft?
Cheers

I unbolted both ends to have the job on the bench. And yep grease everywhere once the gaiter is on. I got mine in individual white plastic sachets. Didn't look enough so I went mad.

That's a kind offer Julian - thank you, got a problem though, no MOT expired on the 6th, I'm still waiting for a windscreen otherwise I'd be down like a shot.
Thought I'd use the down time to attend to some maintenance issues, will be doing the leads, coil packs, oil pressure spring and starter next - gulp!
Still if I was road legal I'd only be driving the thing - where's the fun in that.
Thanks again for the offer.
Cheers
