Hello

I'm thinking of taking up Fernhurst's offer of modifying the rear box to improve the Chimaera's sound track. I've heared several Griffs with this mod done.

Has anyone here had this mod undertaken? If so how trying is it over distances of over 40 miles say ? Also, what effect does it have on engine performance ?

Many thanks V

Podie

Yep, had mine sleeved from the day I picked it up.

The noise can be tiring when you've got a headache, but you get used to it very quickly... to the extent that I hardly notice it anymore (or until others say it's loud).

Pah, mines sleeved, no precats and decatted, with a sports exhaust...

Now thats LOUD !

Just having it sleeved should be fine, well worth it IMHO

Really, Mrs Podie made me post that as a hint for you...

I wouldn't bother if you use it every day over any distance or ever want to do track days without spending lots on extra silencing.

I do around 1000 miles a month with a sleeved exhaust - and like I say it's only ever bothered me when I have a splitting headache anyway. Each to their own...

I'd agree with Chris about the track days though - if these are on your agenda, you'll need to consider extra silencing (try ACT)

Hi Podie (and all!)

I have been tempted with the sleeved exhaust malarkey. My only concern is the quality of the sound since i think my Standard pipe sounds great though i could handle it a bit louder.

With just the sleeve done does it still have that quality growl.

Saying that Podie i think your quite local to me so perhaps one day i could have a listen?

cheers,

Nick

I have just had my chim 4.0 sleeved ( The precats had already been removed ) I have found this to be on the loud side. Now I have only just had it done so I am hoping that it may lose some of the volumn over time.

Don't get me wrong I love the sounds it now makes including the pops and bangs, but I am finding I end up with a headache nearly everytime I drive it (even when the wife is left at home! ). I don't do loads of miles so I am going to leave it for a while, but I may end up putting it back as it was before.

Other option = earplugs

Cheers,
Jon

Some where on this forum it was mentioned that only sleeving half the box made the sound better but didn't increase the volume to much, can anyone confirm this.

It's funny, picked up new Chimaera yesterday, and when I started it up I sat there wondering if the engine was running or not??!! Trouble is, after the Cerbera it sounds sooooooo weedy and pathetic.... Booked in to get sleeved next week

As for the other poster, no it won't get quieter, but you will adjust to it. I had straight through sports pipes and the original clatter cams on my V8 Cerb which made 108dB at 25000 rpm (scary as most Cerbs go up to 7000ish!) and at first it scared me silly, but after a while it just became funny!

Not surprised it was loud at 25k. That would be the noise of the engine firing out of the exhaust

Nah, at 18000 it just glowed a bit, 19500 is was rattling around the engine bay a bit, and at some point past 22000 it was seen in geostationary orbit over Cuba

I took the packing out of the centre box and left the perforated pipes in place several months ago.... Found that it resonated through the car when the roof was on. Decided to remove the centre box completely and weld in straight through pipes... The difference in sound is amazing and there is less resonation in the car... I have heard cars with this mod done with standard rear exhaust tail pipes and they can sound "harsh" and raspy. Ours is quite a deep tone still with the larger tail pipes we have. I was going the decat route but it is just right for me now.

I was at the pub t'other night when a dark blue Chim 400 arrived with a GORGEOUS exhaust note - obviously modded.

I asked the bloke (not a PH'er) what had been done - turns out it had the Cherry Bombs mod(remember the old mini exhausts?) where instead of straight-thru pipes or sleeves, they cut out the whole box, and weld in a pair of the Cherry Bombs.

It was much more bassy, with plenty of rasp - but not nearly so harsh on the ears as the straight through. Think he said Offords did it. This is a route I would be tempted to go down.
