Who’s had a broken crank ?

Just a straw poll. Out of interest, have any of you suffered a broken crankshaft on the 5 litre engine and if so how did it happen. I remember hearing some years ago that a particular build of cars suffered crank failure but it usually happened within the first month or so. Would be interested to receive any info or comments.

Hi steve i have seen many a broken crank, it is basically the design of the casting that has caused the trouble, there is just not enough meat between the big end and main bearing pins

Yes seems so, drove it for about 8 miles... big bang, rattle rattle.

was what done to it steve? mod wise? this could happen and has happened in the past on 500's due to the flywheels and front pulleys getting mixed up from car to car

I think Mod-wise only does electrical mods

Only on the 500, I assume?

Mods were all top end so can't see the flywheel being an issue. Did suffer a Hydro Lock though because of a stuck injector.

Well that was my thought, it appears however that the con rod is not bent, which I am told would happen prior to the crank failing.

Maybe not. A jolt could be enough to damage the crank. It may have had a stress fracture already. A rod would only bend if the crank wasn't turning imo.

FWIW when I picked up my 500 in 1995 after a 1000miles it went back to the factory for a new crank on a recall precaution, maybe there was a bad batch?
