Hi, Chaps,

Once again, I'm looking to buy a Corvette. Unfortunately my funds won't stretch to a C6 Z06 yet, so I've decided on buying the next best thing - a C5 Z06.

Anyways - that's all in the near future. How have you all been?

VetteHeadRacer - did you finally get your monster tuned up? If so, what sort of power is it making these days?

Cheers, folks!

Oh, while I think on... some questions!!!

I'll be using the Z06 to do the 30 mile trip from Woking to Brentford through some fairly bad traffic - will the Vette bankrupt me? My last C5 manual was really good on fuel, but it wasn't used in dreary traffic conditions like this, and the Z06 is higher performance too...

What kinda difference will I notice between my Manual C5 and a Z06? Are they loads quicker? (it's the 405bhp 2002 model, by the way)

Are they a lot more expensive to insure?

Are they easily tunable? Can I get a predator program for it or something? If so, what sort of increases can I expect?

What's comparable with it, performance wise? My C5's used to take out M3's and the like, but I assume that the Z06 is noticably quicker than that?

That's all for now!

No, it's as good as the C5. Mine returned about 23US mpg which is over 26 UK mpg. Overall, it's easy to drive in a light-footed way on the swell of torque.

Yes they are. 0-60 on a stock manual C5 was 4.8 for a good one, the Z06 does it in 4.3 but GM Hi-Tech Performance saw 60 in 3.9. The 0-100 saw the stark difference between 11.5 and 9.9 and the 1/4 in 13.3 and 12.7.

Through the usual American insurers, exactly the same. They don't even know what a Z06 is and these days, the values are pretty much similar.

You can buy things like an improved intake that will give you a few extra bhp. Not sure about Predators but the wisdom is that the 405bhp is nearer 425bhp anyway.

It's faster than a 911, NSX, Ferrari 355, Ferrari 550 Maranello but slower than a Diablo, Gallardo, Ferrari 360 (maybe) or a Porsche Turbo. Not sure about some of the faster TVR's as some Press cars were doctored but the cars are seriously light but on the other hand tend to throw themselves off the road as a result.

If you scroll down this thread there should be some info on a Z06 which was mildly tuned and yielded another 34hp.

Hey Colvette.

I've got your old one, but I am afraid that I still do not want to sell. Done a few more miles now, but still shiny and of course very trouble free.

Saw the old reg (woo hoo) on a muzzie up Chertsey way a couple of times.

Welcome Back.

Hey, Kev,

Pleased you're still enjoying the car - the black mustang that you saw in the Chertsey area was mine, complete with plate. It'd also been on my Hummer H2 after the Corvette.

The Mustang wasn't a great car to drive around the SurreyMiddlesex area due to the very high, long bonnet which made negotiation of tight spaces problematic. The Hummer was the easiest of the lot due to the fact that it was so square. Brilliant car!

Wasn't planning on buying another 'Vette until I had enough cash to buy a C6 Z06, but a C5 Z06 as turned up for me at exactly the right money, so I'm currently looking to sell my current commuter beast (Landrover Freelander 2.0TD4) so I can buy it asap!

I'll keep you informed! It'll hopefully be the next car to carry the "WOO HOO" plate!

Last question - the standard C6 is 400bhp - would a Z06 take one of those out?

Yes - but it's close. The LS2 is far more tightly controlled than the LS6. There have been numerous videos posted by our American friends which show the Z06 taking the LS2 by a few lengths or so. Round a track, the stiffer structure of the Z06 also gives it a few seconds over a Z51 equipped C6.

Hiya Colvette,

Definitely go for a C5 Z06, I drove mine completely stock apart from the air filter to black wing change for about 25,000 miles and the car performed brilliantly in all weather conditions (except heavy snow when it slid about like a badly aligned shopping trolley.
The car was faultless except for one small electrical failure caused by a rubbing earth wire and I was doing an 80 mile round trip daily to work in South East commuter traffic.
The only real down side over a standard C5/C6 is the inability to remove the roof in the summer for those wind in your hair days, but as those number about 5 per year it really is not a problem!
Exclusivity is another thing.......I only met one other C5 Z06 owner on the road in 18 months of commuting!

On the subject of my Twin Turbo Z06.....fingers crossed I will get it back today.....but to be honest I am expecting it back sometime in the next 2 weeks.....ish!

On the subject of horsepower lets just say it should be the fastest road legal Corvette in the UK.......unless someone else knows different!

Figures to follow when I have them.
