Can we stop this hyperbole regarding RMS. Yes it costs around 600GBP to fix but hardly the end of the world (given value of car, depreciation etc.). The exhaust fell of my wife's car the other day and cost a couple of hundred quid to fix. I didn't immediately log-on to Pistonheads to moan and groan. I know RMS is different to an exhaust but come on guys.
It can if it fails catastrophically (VERY unlikely). The more likely type of failure is gradual. I ran a Nissan for two years with a blown main seal and it never got any worse, but I didn't care if I junked the engine!
Sensible advice is to replace it and do the clutch at the same time. The actual RMS is only about £60 in terms of parts and it's right next to the clutch anyway.

I believe there's (unsubstantiated) claims of the oil seeping into the clutch area , but I've yet to hear this from the horses mouth , so to speak. You do know the bulk of the price goes to man hours , so I'm sure you can get it done cheaper at an independent?... Just make sure he has the special tool for the job , which 'pushes' the seal in about 5mm further ... Also check to see if a 997 seal can be fitted .. They are supposedly more reliable.
I'd be inclined to wait a few weeks / months , keeping the leak monitored , and get it sorted pronto if it's getting worse...I'm no expert tho!

Two weeks of (used) Boxster S ownership and guess what... it has RMS failure!
If you bought it from a OPC(?) or dealer then take it back - and don't let them fob you off with that 'fair wear and tear' bullshit if you've only had the car a couple of weeks....not unless you've been wacking it around a track on the weekends
If the dealer is worth their salt, a Retail car should have all 'imminent' faults fixed - as they would hopefully do with clutch, brakes, tyres etc. prior to sale.

Why do the clutch at the same time if the car's only done 14K?
I'm on the same and there's plenty of life in mine.

quite. Porkers are not cheap cars and RMS replacement is hardly penury territory. Just had 4 new pirelli Pzeros on the 968; with geometry, £600. Last yr had a baffle go in the rear exhaust box - "1148 + VAT + fitting" for a standard Porsche replacement exhaust i.e about 10-15% of the trade-in value of the car, or would ahve been if i hadnt saved £700 by fitting a sports exhaust. the list goes on, fully ameliorated by pride of ownership and fun factor

That makes sense.
If it came from OPC take it back - they will sort it free.
If it came from a non OPC dealer then take it back and bend their ear.
If you bought privately then I think you might be stuck.
Sorry to hear of the problem, but the 111 point check and OPC warranty covers this and has served me very well. Perhaps it might be a good investment for the future if you don't have it already?

Thanks y'all.
Bought from non-Porsche dealer.
Anyoner know off the top of their head how much the clutch components cost?
We just bought a 996 privately but the OPC 111 point check showed the start of RMS failure. They fixed it (with a goodwill price owing to the cars recent service history with them) and I elected to get the clutch thrown in at the same time, effectively get 'free' labour on the clutch change. Cost of the clutch was £375 (inc vat) and labour would have been in the region of £450 so I was informed.
I would agree that providing it was a proper retail sale then 5cm pools of oil on a relatively new car 2 weeks after purchase would necessitate the dealer correcting it for you free of charge, that`s why you went to a dealer.
Send the dealer a court summons, a baliff, threaten to camp out on their pitch, tattoo your body with a message or wrath and put a charge on their property.
Or you could just phone them up and ask nicely I suppose.
And no - don`t listen to the idiots who tell you to insist on a new clutch / free hard top / free servicing for life and a quick go on his missus. Just ask nicely if they could see their way to correcting your oil leak for you and leave it at that.
