My company had a contract in south yorkshire last year changing the colour of the speed cameras from grey to yellow. I was instructed by the local authorities I worked for to paint the whole thing, all sides, top bottom.

I have just been notified by the LA that the front should have been done minus the letterbox shaped panel. These are now painted bright yellow and handily enough have rendered the things useless.

If you spot any with a completely yellow front feel free to pass them by with the gay abandon of someone who has found out he will win the lottery daily, as that little letterbox panel is masking the lens.

How many more contracts will you get from them now

Maybe one to scrape the paint off the lens. Heavy Grade emery paper should do it adequately

The panel is plastic, the paint used is a super tough two pack, plus anti graffiti over the top. Emery cloth will probably not touch it and if it does it will bugger the lens even more than it is now.

No problems for me here as I was only carrying out written instructions. As for more LA contracts they still keep coming so I aint exactly blacked my copy book.

I suspect there is a fan somewhere with a large cloud of brown stuff heading towards it, and the two engineers who ran the job will be ducking behind their desks.

Best not go down the emery paper line then eh You don't want any more mishaps occuring that could render the equipment useless for a while longer than it could be!

Update on this I have told the engineer that I will remove using power wire brush but cannot guarantee the outcome. (Daywork rates of course apply)!

I'll leave him to find out that the things are now totally useless.

Priceless Tyke. Just goes to show that you should always specify exactly what you want doing and not expect people to allow for your mistakes .

I bet you thought they where slighty odd instructions at the time. But who are you to query what they want huh .

Could that explain why the cameras in Derbyshire have been set on fire?... to burn the paint off?

Presumably as you are from derbyshire you mean the cameras en route to Matlock. These have been given a Jo'burg necklace.

A biker friend of mine and his mates used to send a runner out with a spray can spraying the cameras on that route luminous orange.

Guys - I'm no fan of speed cameras either and enjoyed reading about tykes good work! - but the thought struck me - you know who'll end up paying for all this though don't you. Yep . . . you - the council tax payer!

i suspect the fact that they were being painted yellow points to them being in the "netting off scheme" where all "profits" are used for "road safety measures" therefore the repair bill will come from the "scheme" not the tax payer

Quite right, pies.

That's why, for the first time in my life, I wouldn't dream of reporting an act of vandalism. I told a police Inspector and he got very cross.

I think the people who pay for these repairs will be happy their tax is being kept from the Council and Chancer of the Exchequer.

A Telegraph report says

"Under new guidelines, officers have been informed that only "serious" crimes, such as murder, rape or so-called hate crimes, should be investigated as a matter of course.

In all other cases, unless there is immediate and compelling evidence, such as fingerprints or DNA material the crime will be listed for no further action............"

So they're not bothered either, then........??
