I've heard mention of a crank sensor before John that causes similar syptoms. Can you hear the fuel pump priming initially? Mine sometimes does this, its spins up very fast but doesn't fire. I found leaving it for 30 seconds and then trying it with the throttle depressed 3/4 seemed to work.

IS the battery a good one? It might not be kicking out enough for a decent spark, just enough to turn it over. I'd suggest getting yourself down to Halfords (assuming you have a 2nd set of wheels), buy a 072 with the 4 year warranty and see if it fires up straight away. If it does, bin the other one or test it. If its half decent, you could always keep it charged up as a spare slave battery.
Make sure you keep the receipt as you will be able to swap it for a fresh battery every couple of years when it does die. Their parts exchange is very good.

The ECU needs at least 11v before it'll work. I had a race battery in my car for a while, which after a period of standing would still turn the engine over, but no spark and no fuel.
Try again after the battery has charged up, or jump start from another car.
Hopefully its as simple as that.
