hi all, i would really value some more of your helpful advice.

it seems (after some recent advice on this forum ) that i'll be looking at the D200 after all.

originally i was trying to choose between the D70s and the 350D, but can now afford to spend a bit ( ) more so am looking at the D200. it does mean i also need to look at the competition namely the 30D.

so can someone please list the advantages of the 30D over the D200 and also vice versa.

finally, is the 30D really that much better than the 20D as i'm sure there will be some good deals on the 20D now that the 30D has come out.

thanks again (oh, and happy easter to you all)

If you are looking at competition for the D200 I think you need to be looking at the 5D rather than the 30D.

Some detailed stuff here of a D200 / 5D / 20D www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond200/page25.asp

If I didn't already have a fair bit of Nikon kit I would have gone Canon and got a 5D.

yeah, of course the 5D is better - it's twice the price of the D200. the 30D is within a couple of hundred pounds of the D200, which is why i was comparing the two (or trying to).

the 5D surely is a professional camera, whereas the 30D and D200 are middle of the range (shall we say serious amateur) DSLRs.

can people with the D200 please tell me why they chose it over the 30D (on merit, not because they already had loads of Nikon lenses) and can those that chose the 30D tell me why they prefer it to the D200. does it all come down to personal preferance at the end of the day?

i am sure that if i choose the 30D or the D200 (or probably the D50/70 or 350D), it would amaze me as it's my first DSLR. any one of them would, no doubt, exceed my photographic skill by far. maybe i need to learn the theory of photography instead of concentrating on buying "the best" DSLR i can afford.

quite honestly. the more reviews i read, the more confused i get. each reviewer picks out some aspects that he/she likes above the competition and i have no idea if it'll make the slightest bit of difference to me in the real world.

thanks again
david

I dont think you have anything to worry about or much to debate. Both are fantastic, and very much in the same league - thats all there is to it. From what Ive read, neither has a significant advantage the other notably lacks.

Canon - better low light focusing (iirc, in the DPreview?) and better ISO performance.
Nikon - Two more MP's (and something else which, being a canon owner, Ive conveniently forgotten...)

Its apples and apples, and a 5D. I read the reviews, but having spoken to many 10/20/5 D owning friends/clients/people (vs far fewer Nikon owners) Ive been indoctrinated and cant ever see myself buying a Nikon, just as I cant see Canon falling behind (or jumping significantly ahead) Both are on par with eachother, you could choose on looks alone and not regret the decision.

[big brother]Yooou Decide![/big brother]

I take my 30D to bed, but would never do that with a Nikon...

ps, canon will make you look cool, and help you win friends and influence models

pps: 20D better than a 30D? From what Ive read, not really no, But its a *slightly* better camera to use in many respects.

this is what i thought, but after reading review upon review, you get lost in the detail.

yes, but is having ISO 100 as opposed to only ISO 200 a big deal?

i think the general consensus is the 2 MPs make not a bit of difference to visible clarity at all but enormous blow ups.

best get looking then to help make the choice.

nice one - and, as far as i can see, completely unbiased

thanks again

I must admit that I joined the Nikon camp last year when I bought my D70. It was simply down to the way I preferred the feel of the Nikon D70, compared to the Canon 350D, which felt too small & plasticky for me.

I would advise you to go to a shop & have a decent play with both cameras, and see which you prefer.

As you point out, there is little to choose between them on tech specs (and I've never noticed a problem with not having an ISO 100 on my D70 )

The D200 does have ISO100, what Bob is referring to is that the Canon performs substantially better at high ISO and suffers from far less noise.

If you plan on doing a lot of low light high ISO shooting, I'd probably go Canon based on that alone.

Think the d200 isnt that bad at higher ISO, shots do apear soft and colour different to the canons (in camera stuff) tho raw and post processing will sort that out anyhow.

30D is little changed from the 20D, spot mettering being the big addition, slightly larger screen etc, not much of a step up.

The D200 has been compared to the 5D quite often, favourably so too, the 5D isnt as user friendly tho IMO produces better images with more detail.

Between the 30D and D200 I'd go see which felt better and worked better for me in my hands, thats all there is in it.

All the mags have pitched the D200 against the 5D, and said the 5D was MARGINALLY better - but the D200 has won all the tests i've read.

D200 is very much a pro camera.

one last question please and then i'll go.......and start fondling (cameras that is)

where would you need to use ISO 1600 and 3200? eg on overcast days or with indoor lighting or more with dusk/dawn lighting?

the main reason for getting this is to use if for taking pics of horses jumping at shows - both outdoors and indoors, so if i would need the higher ISOs for the indoor shows the canon would be better.

you can see i still have *a lot* to learn.

thanks again - all your comments are very helpful.

You probably wont need the higher ISO much (its not a big benefit over the D200) unless you shoot indoors quite a bit. Both have good ISO performance, the canon is only noticibly better right at high end of the ISO scale. From what I gather.

ISO 1600 and 3200 are worth while when you cant use flash and nbeed a quicker shutter speed.

You can 'fake' it anyhow, thats all the 20/30d does, shoot at ISO 800 with -1ev or -2ev(for 3200) RAW and post process boost the exposure.

thank you, that is useful to know.

i'm leaning towards the 30D now and after some helpful pointing to online sites by members on this board, have seen that there seem to be some awfully good deals on it. like the body alone for £889 (with free 2gb card and the money off vouchers for lenses).

why the great deals? not complaining, but no deals on the D200 - no stock even. is it just that the 30D has been out a while?

30D is in fact newer, Nikon seem to have a limited supply of the D200 and its been out months but still quite rare.

Canon produced bucketloads of the 20D and looks like there flooding the market with 30D's aswell.

Nikon has finally caught up and released an a brand new model well worth the upgrade, whereas canon has just released a slightly improved model - praps there is more stock for this reason (just a guess)

Then again, after reading this: "there's no significant difference between eight and ten megapixels (especially considering the EOS 30D's "crisper" per-pixel sharpness) and that the D200's sensor just isn't as good as the Canon CMOS at higher sensitivities (ISO 1600 / 3200)" praps Nikon decided to knock the D200 on the head, and let canon win this round
