Further to my previous thread ref jerkiness/shunting,having just checked all connections etc under the bonnet I decided to put the strobe on it at tickover and see what the timing was!

Turns out its at approx 12deg BTDC can't be accurate because theres no marks that far on the pulley!

Now reading the Bible it says anywhere beetween and 8 and 4 is the norm!?

Car is 4.3 precat fitted with a standard 500 cam, looking at the ECU which I unplugged and replugged to reset it there is a sticker saying Tornado! so I guess its been chipped in the past?

Oh and car has just had a 24k service and the timing was set(as per invoice)

EEERM just thought, should I disconnected the vac advance pipe?
Tick over was approx 950rpm!

Any advice as usual is very much appreciated .

Thanks again
Rob

Mine was set to 13 deg BTDC when I got it, and it too had been set up by Mark Adams. I think the only way you can really set the timing outside of the factory spec is on a dyno, to achieve max power/torque without pinking under load. Another way is on the max advance:
I set mine up on the max advance - about 35 deg BTDC from memory (at about 4500 rpm) which equates to about 8 or 10 deg at tickover.
Perhaps yours was set on the max advance, in which case 12 deg at tickover sounds reasonable.

The timing marks may not be accurate. Really need to check with a dial gauge down no.1 plug hole to be sure.
