Got bored with having to switch the ignition on to open the boot on my Chim and had to do something about it. I have no alarm problems so did not want to change for one that can do this from the remote. So to cut a short story long have fitted a push button switch inside the car below the hood mounting bolt driver's side to open boot when alarm switched off.

My question is, does anyone know of a black round push button switch (from any car) about 20mm dia that is better than the only one I could find. Do not want any symbols on it.

Hi Ivan,
Have you tried looking on the Maplin or Radio Spares web sites. You may well find something there. I think RS do mail order but not Maplins.
Hope this helps.

Big Al.

PS BTW, What colour is your car?

Big Al - Maplin do not have anything suitable but forgot RS, will give them a try, thanks. Maplin also do mail order nowadays by the way. My Chim is Crimson Starmist Metallic.

DHAMAH - what can I say, perfect. I was hoping for something where you could not see the screws but have not ruled it out. It also has the advantages that I could mount it on a box to give it that special look.

two for the price of one!

Maybe you could use a dimmer switch and only open the boot half way when it's raining

I thought it was, same as mine! I think one of the best colours.
Big Al.
BTW are you going to tell us what, how and where you have done this switch mod? or is it a secret.
Sound a brilliant idea!

Sorry Big Al, I could tell you but I would have to kill you

Basically I have wired up a relay so that when the interior light comes on I can open the boot by using my new switch. Obviously by the same token it will only work with either door open and not with both doors closed. Therefore if the car is parked locked with the roof off the switch is disabled and you cannot open the boot. It may not be a perfect solution but it has solved my problem for a massive investment of £8.00.

As far as the colour goes, it was not my first choice to be honest but since it is so hard to find a genuinely good car in any colour I bought it anyway. Having said that the colour has grown on me and I now think it suits the car very well and most people that have seen it have agreed with this (or been too polite to disagree).

I agree with ABBTVR, try maplin.co.uk
This one looks really nice, but its a 19.2mm, to view it, go to www.maplin.co.uk > components and cables > switches.
The second from bottom, Its a nice Vandal Resistant Stainless steel button- I have used it before and it looks great.
PS they do, do delivery.
Alan
Edited to add, sorry, i just read this....'Maplin do not have anything suitable'
If you still havent had any luck, try Farnell, they have a wide range.

Nice one Alan, never even heard of Farnell to be honest, they have a massive range of components. I have already spotted a couple that will do to replace my cheapo switch with before it packs up.

Mod working a treat and so simple to do!

I don't want to be a doom and gloom merchant, but have you checked that the button can't be operated if someone leans into the open car and switches the interior light one to the permanent option? Depending on how sensitive your microwave alarm is, it might not be tripped!

SMB, can see where you are coming from but it does not work like that, the position of the interior light switch makes no difference at all, it only works with the door open - trust me.
