I often visit my father who lives near Linton in Cambs. There are 2 shortish stretches of dual carrigeways near there and in the rush hours, the left hand lane is always bumper to bumper for 500m plus. Now the right hand lane is always completely empty even if the 2 lanes don't filter in for another 500 odd metres or so.

I know that it doesn't make much difference in time by moving up the right side, but due to everyone staying in the left lane, the road is clogged up for miles back. There are 2 lanes there for a reason people.

The other morning some office gimp, on his way to work saw me comming on the outside and pulled out without indicating. He then sat on the white line and wouldn't let me pass. There was over 500m of empty right hand lane! This is the 3rd time this has happened. Sheer igronance, and illegal! There are 2 lanes so use them you pathetic sheep! He was lucky that I was in a hire car as I was going to either shunt him or go on the verge. If the traffic wasn't moving at 10 mph, I would've got out and verbaly confronted him.

I warn you nerds, that the next person who illegaly does that to me will pay!!!! You should think carefully on the results your aggressive actions will provoke.

As for that idiot, I still am in two minds to ambush him one morning and follow him to work "to question him" as to why he thinks he is alowed to do that.

Just another pov though Nick, most of the traffic has filtered in because they knew that they were going to have to turn. In going round the outside, you are simply shortening your journey time at the expense of others. They may therefore be justifiably p1ssed off by a perceived lack of politeness on your part.

There are two lane for a reason, but it is usually so that fast moving traffic can overtake lorries etc without inconveniencing them.

Not saying that you are doing anything wrong - just that there are two sides .

Surely the fact that you were in a hire car meant that you could have shunted him or gone on the verge.

Besides, chill out Armybloke, I'm with daydreamer on this one. People like you using the second lane is likely to enrage people in lane one in much the same way as you are enraged now.

I'm with armynick on tyhis one .. recently there were raodwroks on the chesterfield bypass and there were "two lanes become one further ahead" signs on one stretch on dualcarriageway, but the actual reduction in lanes was a good mile ahead. people were bumper to bumper in the n/s lane leaving the outside lane empty, and to top that lorry drivers would block the outer lane to stop people using it .. result was that the single lane backed up to the previous roundabout bringing that to a standstill also, using the two lanes would have halved the tailback so inconveniencing no-one else. why do lorry drivers think they have the right to dictate the actiions of the other drivers in these cases .. by doing so they interferred with the otherwise free-moving roundabout. makes me angry. In general lorry drivers are courteous but in a few cases they're downright obstructive.
anyone know why this happens?

Joos - agree with you and Armynick on this one. Think something was made mention about it being put in the Highway Code that you SHOULD use both lanes and then filter IN TURN where the lanes merge. Have often seen signs at road works saying "use both lanes". So I would guess that this is the preferred procedure.

With regard to the lorry drivers situation, the dual carriageway that I use on my journey to work, had road works last year on the north bound side only. On my way home from work I used to note the length of queue on the other side each night. Intrestingly the times when there were lorry drivers playing silly buggers, the queue was over twice the length as when people were using both lanes.

i'm with armynick too, as long as he doesn't cruise right up to the merge point then force his way in then i agree you should use BOTH lanes.

the problem with this country is everyone is trying to be couteous by moving over earlier, then when someone shoots down the outside they get offended as they know that c(s)hould be them... so instead of doing whats right, they settle for what they think is the 'happy medium' and block all traffic so they have to suffer.

the road system in this country would work much better if everyone wasn't so damn pig-headed, if everyone used both lanes as they normally would then the world would be a happier place.

It would appear that people seem to think that they'll get where they're going quicker if they are one car ahead in a queue. Just selfish I suppose.

The reason we don’t have this system in the Highway Code and use it as common practice, is because, according to whoever decide these things, the British are not intelligent enough to understand it.!! (They use thae system, ‘Zipper system’ in America’!!!)

Glad I'm not the only one who feels like this.

If I'm in the left hand lane and the right filters in, I always play the "let one car in" game. Like previously mentioned, it's politeness, good manners and keeps the flow of traffic moving. If I'm in the right hand lane, I progress at a gentle speed, indicate to filter left and wait until someone lets me in. It's not hard is it?

A shame more people don't do it, there would be a few less angry people around.

I'm by no means a perfect driver and I do speed (when the road conditions allow) but otherwise I stick to the highwaycode and am curteous to other drivers.

I do this too - but does anyone else find that if you let one car in, the Vectra/BMW/Mercedes/Golf () behind it always tries to push its way in front as well??

surely they have countdown signs from 800 yards out, normally as a rule i let any car in up to the 200 yard mark, then i feel you've had enopugh signs to tell you to get in the un-blocked lane.

getting in so early is fine but can not see the problem with others who carry on for a while, the @rses are the ones who fly down leaving it till the last minute to get in lane.

Agree with this, the one thing that really p*sses me off are the ones that brake hard from 50 to 10 mph to get in the 1.25 car lengths in front of you at the 0 yard marker. Without your co-operation it cannot be done SAFELY, so its not necessarily good driving, its everyone else around you good driving that prevents you from having an accident.

By all means use the 200 yard dual carriageway stretches to make up 5 car places in the queue, but do so safely. However doing so when the traffic is virtually at a stand still, the perception is you are queue jumping and you know how we Brits love a fair orderly queue .

Me I'll let you in because I don't want a coming together, but I do know quite a few people that would carry on and drive into your passenger door if you try this whilst under heavy braking swerving to the left. I'm afraid that there'd be no shortage of witnesses to this that have a similar point of view, hence your insurance loss.

Short stretches of dual carriageway, as had already been said, are IMHO there to let you clear slow traffic during the course of normal driving, i.e. getting past lorries, caravans and numpties, they are not necessarily there to make anyones particular journey quicker at the expense of others. Consideration is a two way thing and I’m afraid that this type of thing it is ‘all take and no give’ on the part of the wide boy that goes up the outside of stationary traffic

how true is that, sure it's the company car drivers who don't care about the odd tussle with other cars who go for the "200yard dash".Majority of us in our own cars just don't want the hassle of going through insurance companies to claim for an avoidable prang.

Also does no good for your heart rate either, getting all road ragey aboutit.
