Need a piece of software for a friend so that she can edit her website.

Needs to be free! (or as cheap as possible)

Also any recommendations on FTP software, the hosting company i'm using for her site doesn't support access via Internet Explorer.

I've downloaded CuteFTP on a trial basis but need a more permanent fix of my friend.

Thanks,

Phill

Yo!

Filezilla, best FTP client I've seen and it's free!

I'm a big fan of Context as an editor. It's free, and comes with a load of different highlighter files for different file types (ASP, PHP, C++, etc) which use colour coding to help you check your syntax.

FireFTP is an extension for Firefox, and opens in a new tab. http://fireftp.mozdev.org/

SmartFTP and PHP Designer 2005.

Both free/shareware.

I swear by FileZilla! It's my FTP client of choice!

I also use TextPad, similiar idea to that already mentioned in that it allow syntax highlighting but also allows for extensions to be installed as needed e.g. auto-completion of code

Another vote for smartFTP, very easy to use & free for personal use.

Yep, SmartFTP. It's easy to use and, as previously mentioned, it's free for personal use.

As for an editor, I'd go for UltraEdit. I work for a software house and we all use it here. It's not free but it doesn't cost much: around £20, I think. Out of the box it does syntax checking for an amazing number of different languages, including PHP, has some useful little tools and, in the latest version, I think it includes a diff util. I used to use PHPEdit but found that it wasn't stable enough for use at work!

I'll chime in again, textpad for editing, includes syntax highlighting, has loads of spunkingly good features like macros and multiple clipboards etc.

You can create your own document classes etc, and cusotmise your own syntax highlighting should you so desire.
