Good Chassis , Bad Chassis
Discussion
Hi there
After months of thinking, saving and a bit more thinking I've decided it's time to take the plunge and get myself a Chim.
I've started to look around and have seen numerous cars of varying price and quality so am starting to get a feel for what maybe a good one and what to avoid like the plague!
I thought i'd found myself a nice car yesterday at an independent (non TVR) garage but when they put it on the ramps I was a bit concerned by the condition of the chassis for a 98 car. It looked like most of the rust was superficial and with a bit of tlc would be ok but not being an expert it's a bit of a gamble to take.
Just wondering if anyone out there has any pics of their chassis so I've got something to compare this to.
And finally they said they took the car in part ex against a Tuscan. Would it be bad etiquette to post something in the appropriate section to see I can track down the previous owner via these forums?
Cheers

Would you have been happier with a fresh coat of underseal?
In my opinion, when buying, it's better to see the rust warts and all than have it hidden - then get it treated yourself, knowing the treatment has been applied over a sound chassis. Obviously avoid anything which looks like structurally-damaging rust, but untreated, any Chim chassis will have surface rust by now.
If a car's been regularly treated obviously any rust won't (shouldn't) be visible, but hopefully bills for the materials and/or work will evidence the regular treatment and (hopefully) sound condition. It's an otherwise unloved-looking car with fresh underseal I'd be wary of.

I agree with Griffter, when I got mine I could see the beginnings of surface rust where the plastic coating had cracked. I then spent the long weekend cleaning it all back and re-coating.
If the metal is sound then you should be okay although it can be tricky to assess the condition of the top of the outriggers.
There are some chassis pics on the TVR Chimaera Pages Gallery
