Hi,

Recently acquired a Compaq Armada E500 from a friend who has upgraded. It chugs a bit as it only as 256MB, so I want to upgrade it.

As I understand it I can upgrade to a max of 512MB (2x 256MB DIMMs) but I am having trouble tracking down exactly what model it is as loads of websites quote Armadas as having different 4 figure codes. Mine has nothing on the panel on the back that looks relevant - it says "series PP2060" on the back but that doesn't coincide with anything else I can find.

It is a PIII 790MHz and it has a 4.5GB drive.

Can anybody help ID it or tell me what sort of memory I need?

So far all I know for certain is 2x 256MB 144pin SODIMMS but I'm not sure if I need PC100 or PC133 or any other details...

Any clues? Nothing much comes up on ebay so where else can I get it cheaply?

Edit:

Will this do the job?

www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=24226

It says SDR as opposed to DDR or DDR2 - is that right??

Found this comment on the ebuyer website:

I felt lucky and decided to try my luck with 2 of these in my old-but-trusty Compaq Armada E500 PIII/700 which only had 256Mb in it.

WinXP is of course a hog so I felt that at this price it would be sensible to max it up to 512Mb.

Only trouble is, this machine uses PC100 and this is PC133. So I had my fingers crossed. Happy to report it works perfectly. There was a brown-pants moment initially when it DIDNT work, but then both modules did work fine on their own, then both together - so perhaps they just needed a little re-seat.

Hope somebody with a PC100 lappie finds this useful, and I'll leave a comment in the future if there's ever any sign of trouble after I've used this for a while.

5 stars for now as it's cheap and does what it's supposed to do, and it's much cheaper than hard-to-find PC100, simple as that.

Sounds good - any reason the PC133 wouldn't work?

Hmmm, just checked the laptop and the DIMMs are of different types and one is a PC133 so think I may have answered my own question....

Thoughts?
