I'm after a sports back box for my 996.
I want a better sound and some hp increase.
Has anyone tried or heard the Fabspeed maxflo system in the flesh or the Dansk?
Are the Supercup muffler bypasses too loud for everyday use and are they legal, db wise?
E-bay have a US made Ztek system for $600, it's just a bit risky importing it not knowing what it's like.
Can anyone help?
Thanks PC

I've spoken to Steve M at JZ Machtech today, he's of the opinion there is no HP gain from fitting replacement silencers on their own to the 996.
I've just taken delivery of my Mk1 GT3 which has a pair of Hayward and Scott stainless silencers fitted, I personally find them too noisy. If you want to have a listen and like them I'd be happy to do a deal on them.
(I'm intending to go back to standard boxes)

Anything called 'Supercup' that hails from the land of Fabspeed will be LOUD. Trust me on this one.

I had a set, admittedly on a 993, that sounded like every single TVR ever built had been squeezed into the engine bay of my 911. Very furious indeed

Link below for an apparent comparison (soundwise) between the Fabspeed maxflow and the standard 996 stock exhaust. The Fabspeed website also has a clip of the Supercup and it sounds way too loud for my liking.

in my humble O that sounds shite. not entirely dissamilar to the bloke up the road with the nova-wheely-bin-exhaust combo. dont waste your money. or waste your money but not on that.

Is that the Supercups that you think sound shit?
I must admit they sound a bit like a tractor when at low revs (on the Fabspeed web-site).
I think the maxflo sounds good on this site, much better than stock; but do you think they're good value at 595 quid plus vat?
There's a design tec box for 595 + vat from www.design911.co.uk , anyone got an opinion on these?
anyone heard the dansk box from www.type-911.co.uk ?

I'm in the market (I think!) for a 996 sports exhaust but can't seem to find anything that really grabs me so far. The best I've come across so far (soundwise at least)is the Fabspeed maxflow albeit viz the link above I'll now check out Techart. I emailed Design911 for a sound clip for the Design Tech exhaust but the best they could apparently tell me was that 'it sounds like the Fabspeed exhaust' (for what that's worth).

honestly, i think it sounds terrible. not even close to how it should sound, let alone how it could sound.

they all sound similar at low revs, (but who drives at low revs?) but the note of the engine when in the upper part of the rev range is just totally being lost here. it sounds ordinary. and your car isn't ordinary.

i hate to say it (especially as I'm a right tightwad) but nice things cost money, spend more and you'll get more. mine cost 3k and sounds peachy (it came on the car by the way, there is no way on earth i could ever spend 3k on a zorst, but my point is its worth it: it sounds leagues different to the one you've linky'd too)

if you wanna gimme a call ill 'play' mine to you as I'm driving.

I've found Sports Sound mufflers on ebay, basically they're replacement standard silencers bored out for a better sound and improved air flow.
They sound good on the sound clip and at 250 quid they might do the job.
any opinions?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Porsche-911-996

After much phoning around,I think the safest option is the Porsche switchable system for around a grand fitted, altho it costs more to fit the switch and personally i wouldn't bother.
Anyone out there got the Porsche switchable silencers?

Jaybee that would be superb if you possibly could, thank you. I really have shopped around and the best I've found so far overall is the Fabspeed although to be truthful I'm not 100% about the sound (I know it's a personal thing).

PCPaul,

Personally I'd steer clear of the ebay silencers. All they have done if you look at the pic, is weld a small diameter bypass tube from the post cat tube to the silencer exit. Yes this will produce a nice rasp at high revs, but will play havoc with your back pressure at idle (ie no back pressure). The original Porsche sports exhaust had a similiar design (with a valve in the middle that only opened at speed), they have changed it now to only bypass the 2nd and 3rd silencer sections in the exhaust with a larger diameter pipe (again, still with a valve). (each box has 3 sections btw, 3 small silencers if you like).

I'm in the process of actually making a PSE by welding up the bypass pipe myself from the 2nd section (you can see the bit where the PSE pipe goes if you look at a standard exhaust) and then welding it to the exit pipe - hey presto, a PSE for the cost of an ebay normal exhause and some mild steel pipe.

Here are the clips, doesn't do it justice though. I just can't seem to capture the rasp, or the over run.

There's some medium and low speed stuff. All clips were taken with the video camera on the passenger seat, and the windows open about in inch.

If anyone is ever near me, you're more than welcome to come and have a listen.
